Chapter 7 - The Man Who Had Nothing Left

Malcolm Whitmore had spent his life buying exits.

Private aircraft.

Political favors.

Attorneys.

Loyalty.

When federal custody finally closed around him, he purchased one more.

A transport officer had accepted money months earlier.

The escape lasted forty-seven minutes before authorities understood what had happened.

By then Malcolm was gone.

Marco immediately moved Sofia to a secure location.

Elena objected when he tried to move her too.

“I’m not family.”

“That’s irrelevant.”

“It’s extremely relevant.”

“Malcolm knows you’re close to my mother.”

“Half Boston knows.”

“Exactly.”

She stared at him.

“You’re impossible.”

“And you’re coming.”

She did.

Not because he ordered her.

Because she understood the risk.

They relocated to a coastal property belonging to Nicholas.

Sofia spent the first evening cooking pasta despite three people insisting she rest.

Marco stood near the window watching security vehicles.

Elena joined him.

“You can’t protect everyone every second.”

“I can try.”

“That’s exhausting.”

“Yes.”

“Do you ever stop?”

“No.”

She touched his hand.

He looked down.

Neither moved.

Then Marco slowly turned his palm upward and intertwined his fingers with hers.

It was the smallest gesture Elena had ever seen from him.

It felt more intimate than a kiss.

“Marco.”

“Yes?”

“If this becomes something—”

“It already is.”

She swallowed.

“If it becomes more, I’m not joining your world.”

“I don’t want you to.”

“I mean it.”

“So do I.”

“I won’t become someone who needs permission to leave a room.”

“You never would.”

“And I’m not quitting my career.”

“I wouldn’t ask.”

“And if you ever tell me my shift is finished again—”

He smiled.

“I learned.”

She smiled too.

Then Dominic entered.

“Marco.”

The warmth vanished.

“What?”

“We found Malcolm’s vehicle.”

“Where?”

“Near St. Catherine’s.”

Elena froze.

The hospital.

The place where she had met Sofia.

Why there?

They discovered the answer quickly.

Malcolm had called Celeste.

He told her to meet him in the old oncology wing.

She went.

Alone.

When Marco learned that, he swore for the first time Elena had ever heard.

Police surrounded the hospital.

Celeste was inside with her father.

Malcolm demanded a car and safe passage.

He claimed he had evidence that could destroy the DeLuca family.

Marco knew he was bluffing.

The ledger had already done whatever damage could be done.

But Celeste was still inside.

“She went voluntarily,” Dominic said.

“She’s still a hostage now,” Marco replied.

Elena looked at him.

“You’re going in.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“She was supposed to be my wife.”

“She humiliated your mother.”

“Yes.”

“She helped investigators.”

“Yes.”

“And now you feel responsible.”

Marco looked at her.

“I don’t leave people behind because they disappointed me.”

That sentence told Elena everything she needed to know about him.

He entered the hospital with federal negotiators nearby.

Malcolm waited in an empty consultation room.

Celeste sat across from him.

She was crying.

“Marco.”

Malcolm stood.

“You came.”

“You asked.”

“I need transportation.”

“No.”

Malcolm laughed.

“You think you’re in control?”

“No.”

That surprised him.

Marco continued.

“The police are in control. The prosecutors are in control. You surrendered control when you started running.”

Malcolm’s face tightened.

“I built everything.”

“And then risked your daughter to save it.”

“I did it for her.”

Celeste looked at him.

“No.”

Malcolm turned.

“Celeste—”

“No.”

She stood.

“You did it because losing money terrified you more than losing me.”

“Sit down.”

“No.”

“Celeste.”

For perhaps the first time in her life, she did not obey.

She walked toward Marco.

Malcolm reached for her.

Marco stepped between them.

No weapon.

No punch.

No theatrical confrontation.

Just stillness.

Malcolm stopped.

Marco looked at him.

“Let her go.”

Something collapsed inside the older man.

Maybe he finally understood there was nowhere left to purchase.

He lowered his hand.

Celeste crossed the room.

Federal agents entered.

Malcolm was arrested.

Again.

This time, there would be no purchased exit.

Outside, Celeste looked at Marco.

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

She swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“I loved you.”

Marco looked at her for a long time.

“I think you loved what marrying me meant.”

She cried.

“Maybe.”

“That doesn’t mean you can’t learn the difference.”

She nodded.

Then walked away.

Elena watched from across the corridor.

Marco approached her.

“You came.”

“Of course.”

He touched her cheek.

“You shouldn’t have.”

“Stop deciding where I should be.”

“Right.”

She smiled.

“Still learning.”

He leaned closer.

Their foreheads touched.

Then Nicholas’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

Marco noticed.

“What?”

Nicholas slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s Mom.”

Marco went still.

“What happened?”

May you like

Nicholas looked toward Elena.

“She collapsed.”
