Chapter 5 - The Corporate Executioner

The private study on the third floor of the Whitmore mansion was a monument to old-money opulence—leather-bound books, dark mahogany paneling, a roaring stone fireplace, and a massive mahogany desk overlooking the snowy Hudson Valley.
Right now, it felt like an execution chamber.
Adrian sat rigidly in his high-backed leather armchair, staring blankly at the small micro-SD card resting on the desk in front of him. He hadn't touched it. He was terrified of what would happen to his world the moment that tiny piece of plastic was inserted into the multi-screen terminal behind his desk.
Clara stood by the fireplace, her arms crossed over her chest, watching him with the detached coldness of a prosecutor reviewing a slam-dunk case. Sophie was safely tucked away in the adjoining secure suite upstairs, guarded by Miller—who had quietly switched sides the moment Clara revealed her true identity, recognizing her as the formidable corporate attorney and federal consultant she had been before marrying into the Whitmore dynasty.
"You... you survived," Adrian finally spoke, his voice hoarse, devoid of its usual billionaire arrogance. "The river... the search parties... we found your coat on the jagged rocks below the cliffs. There was blood, Clara. So much blood."
"It wasn't my blood, Adrian," Clara replied evenly, her voice devoid of warmth. "It was a deer carcass Vanessa and her hired thugs dragged to the ledge to stage a convincing crime scene while they threw me off into the freezing rapids. They didn't count on the undertow carrying me down toward the fishermen’s cove three miles south, where a local family pulled me out before my lungs filled completely with water."
Adrian flinched as if struck by a physical blow. "Why... why didn't you come straight back to me? Why let me believe you were dead for five years?"
"Come back to you?" Clara let out a sharp, humorless laugh that held no mirth. "And tell you what? That the woman you had been secretly sleeping with for eight months tried to murder me? You would have believed your corporate mistress over your wife, Adrian. At the time, your company was facing federal fraud indictments, and you were desperate to merge with Vanessa’s family holdings. You would have helped her finish the job to protect your stock options."
Adrian opened his mouth to deny it, but the words died in his throat. He couldn't. Because five years ago, he did suspect Vanessa was involved in things she shouldn't have been, and he did look the other way because the Whitmore empire was bleeding cash and he needed the merger to survive.
"I was a coward," Adrian whispered, burying his face in his hands. "I was a blind, arrogant fool."
"You were worse than a coward, Adrian. You were an accomplice by convenience," Clara said sharply, walking over to the desk and tapping her finger against the micro-SD card. "And now, your new wife has given birth to your 'precious son'—Noah—while systematically draining your corporate accounts through shell companies managed by her brother. Did you really think little Noah was choking naturally today?"
Adrian’s head snapped up, his eyes widening in horror. "What are you talking about? The pediatrician said it was acid reflux!"
"The pediatrician was bribed by Vanessa to prescribe a mild sedative disguised as vitamin drops, which she’s been slipping into Noah’s bottle for weeks to keep him quiet so she can attend her society galas without interruption," Clara said smoothly. "Today, she miscalculated the dosage. Noah stopped breathing because Vanessa overdosed him. I walked into the nursery and saved his life. And your loving wife immediately tried to frame me for attempted murder to cover her tracks."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis. Adrian stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the Persian rug.
"Where is she?" Adrian snarled, the billionaire predator finally waking up, realizing his entire life, his legacy, and his newborn son had been held hostage by a manipulative sociopath. "Where is Vanessa?!"
