Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Old Guard

Carmine Falcone’s smile vanished entirely. He realized with sudden, chilling clarity that the drama unfolding before him wasn't tearing the Duca syndicate apart—it was purging it.

“What are you waiting for?!” Carmine barked at his enforcers. “Kill them all! Wipe out the Duca bloodline right here!”

The three Falcone enforcers raised their weapons—but before their fingers could touch the triggers, the gymnasium windows shattered inward with a deafening crash.

Smoke grenades landed across the floor, hissing dense, white clouds that filled the room in seconds. Automatic gunfire erupted from the perimeter doors as Duca loyalists—men who had remained fiercely devoted to Lorenzo’s code of honor—poured into the building.

Before Carmine could draw his pistol, two massive Duca enforcers grabbed him from behind, slamming his face against the concrete floor and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

“Secure the perimeter! Arrest every Falcone soldier!” Marco shouted through the thickening smoke, his voice regaining its commanding, tactical edge.

Within three minutes, the fight was over.

The Falcone men were disarmed, zip-tied, and dragged out toward the waiting police cruisers and private transport vans. The police—long paid off or too terrified to interfere with the syndicates—would find a neatly packaged federal RICO case waiting on their desks by Monday morning, complete with Carmine Falcone’s signed confessions, bank records, and smuggled weapons inventories.

The gymnasium slowly cleared of smoke. The harsh autumn sunlight poured through the broken windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

Lorenzo stood motionless beside the miniature student table.

Marco walked over, stopping five feet away. He unclipped his holster, removed his diamond-encrusted signet ring—the symbol of his rank as senior advisor to the Duca family—and laid it carefully on the edge of the wooden table.

“My debt is paid, Boss,” Marco said quietly. “I’ll turn myself in to the federal authorities in Manhattan tonight. Everything I own has already been transferred to a trust fund in Emma’s name to compensate for what happened to Stefano.”

Lorenzo looked at the ring, then up at the man who had been his brother in arms for fifteen years.

“You broke your oath, Marco,” Lorenzo said, his voice flat and cold. “You brought blood into a sanctuary.”

“I know.”

“You will leave New York tonight. You will go to the cabin in Montana, and you will never return to the city, the docks, or any property bearing the Duca name.”

Marco blinked, surprised by the leniency. He inclined his head slowly. “Thank you, Boss.”

“Not for you,” Lorenzo corrected, turning his gaze toward Clara Bennett, who was walking over with tear-stained cheeks to pull her daughter into a fierce, protective embrace. “For them. The past is settled. But the debt of the innocent remains.”

Marco picked up his coat, gave one final, solemn nod, and walked out through the double doors into the bright autumn afternoon, never to be seen in the underworld again.
