Chapter 8 - The Birth of a New Empire

Two months later.
The private maternity wing of Virginia Mason Hospital smelled of sterile white lilies and warm sunshine pouring through large bay windows overlooking Puget Sound.
Outside, spring had finally arrived in Seattle, painting the cherry trees in brilliant shades of pink against the deep blue of the water.
I lay propped up against crisp white hospital pillows, my breathing slow and even.
In my arms, wrapped in a soft pink cashmere blanket, lay my daughter.
Her name was Clara Vance-Sterling. She had a full head of dark hair, tiny rosebud lips, and a grip so strong she was already holding my index finger with her entire fist.
The door to the private suite opened softly.
My father walked in, carrying a massive bouquet of yellow tulips—my favorite—followed closely by Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing partner of our corporate legal team.
“How are my two favorite girls doing?” Arthur asked, his stern, billionaire facade melting into a wide, proud grandfatherly smile as he walked over to the bed.
“We’re doing wonderfully, Dad,” I smiled, kissing the top of Clara’s head.
Arthur Pendelton cleared his throat, stepping forward with a leather portfolio tucked under his arm.
“Forgive the timing, Mrs. Sterling-Vance,” the lawyer said formally, though a warm grin broke across his weathered face. “But corporate business waits for no one—not even the birth of a future chairwoman.”
I looked up, raising an eyebrow. “What is it, Arthur?”
“The final corporate restructuring of Sterling Global Holdings is officially complete,” Arthur said, opening the portfolio and handing me a golden Montblanc pen. “The board has voted unanimously to rebrand the entire conglomerate under our primary maritime shipping charter. Effective today, the company is officially known as Vance-Sterling Global Logistics. And your father has officially stepped down to transition the chairmanship... to you.”
I looked down at the documents.
My maiden name and my married name were fused together in bold gold embossed lettering at the top of the page.
Elena Vance-Sterling, Chief Executive Officer & Chairperson.

“You built this, sweetheart,” my father said softly, resting a warm hand on my shoulder. “You kept your head when everything burned down around you. Now, you lead.”
I signed my name across the dotted line in clean, unhurried strokes.
