Chapter 12 - The Forged Bloodline

"It’s my signature," Ryan said, staring at the paper under the harsh kitchen pendant light. He ran a trembling finger over the ink. "Sarah... look at the loop on the *R*. Look at the slant of the *n*. It looks identical to mine. How is that possible?"
"Because your mother has handled every financial document in your family since you were eighteen," I said, a wave of cold nausea washing over me. "The college tuition paperwork, the tax returns from your early jobs, the vehicle titles. She had hundreds of samples of your signature. Or worse... Brandon did it."
Brandon was an amateur artist before he dropped out of three different colleges to become a 'crypto investor' funded entirely by his mother’s inheritance. He had an uncanny knack for calligraphy, a party trick he used to show off at family dinners when we were still on speaking terms.
"We can't afford four hundred and fifty thousand dollars," I said, panic rising into my throat like bile. "We don't even have fifty thousand in liquid savings. If she freezes our accounts with a preliminary injunction, we won't even be able to pay the mortgage next month. We’ll lose the house. We’ll lose Lily’s school."
"I’m going to see Brandon," Ryan said, slamming his hand onto the table. The wood groaned under the impact.
"No, Ryan! That’s exactly what they want! They want you to show up, lose your temper, and give them grounds for a restraining order or criminal assault charges!"
"Then what do we do, Sarah?!" Ryan shouted, the agony breaking through his stoic composure. "They smashed Lily's birthday peace! They tagged our home! Now they want to take the roof from over her head! All because we bought her a two-hundred-dollar bike instead of handing the money to Brandon to pay his gambling debts! When does it end?!"
"It ends when we stop playing their emotional game and start playing the legal one," I said firmly, grabbing his face with both hands, forcing him to look directly into my eyes. "Eleanor thinks she’s untouchable because she has money and Brandon is her precious golden prince. But liars always get sloppy when they think they’ve won. Tomorrow morning, we hire our own lawyer. And we hire a forensic document examiner."
Ryan took a ragged, uneven breath. Slowly, the wild panic in his eyes receded, replaced by the grim determination of a father backed into a corner.
"First thing tomorrow," he promised.
Upstairs, the floorboards creaked. We both froze.
Lily was standing at the top of the stairs, clutching a stuffed purple rabbit by its ear. Her small frame looked tiny against the towering shadow of the hallway.
"Mommy?" she whimpered, her lower lip trembling. "Are the bad people going to take my bike away again?"
My heart tore clean in half. I hurried up the stairs, scooped her into my arms, and held her close against my chest, feeling the frantic, hummingbird beat of her little heart.

"No, my sweet girl," I whispered fiercely into her hair. "Nobody is touching your bike. Ever again."
