Chapter 8 - Showdown at the Marina

The black SUV tore through the midday Miami traffic, cutting across the MacArthur Causeway with terrifying precision. The salt air whipped through the open windows as Dominic navigated the heavy industrial zone near the downtown shipping docks.

In the passenger seat, Serena sat upright, her hands resting calmly in her lap. The fear that had paralyzed her entire life was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity. For twenty-four years, she had been a pawn on her father’s chessboard. Today, she was stepping onto the board herself.

The SUV screeched to a halt outside Warehouse 42 of the Biscayne Municipal Marina.

The sprawling brick building sat right on the water’s edge, surrounded by towering stacks of shipping containers and heavy cranes swinging overhead. Parked outside were three sleek black sedans belonging to Marcus Vance’s security detail.

Dominic cut the engine. He turned to Serena, his hand resting near his hidden holster. “Stay behind me. No matter what happens.”

“I’m not hiding anymore, Dominic,” Serena replied softly, opening her door.

They stepped out into the humid dockside air.

As they approached the massive sliding doors of Warehouse 42, two armed guards in dark suits stepped out to block their path. Before the guards could even reach for their weapons, Dominic moved with blinding, explosive speed.

He swept the legs out from under the first guard, sending him crashing hard onto the concrete floor, and simultaneously drove the heel of his palm into the second guard’s chest, dropping him instantly. It was over in three seconds.

Serena didn't even flinch.

Dominic kicked the heavy metal door open wide.

Inside, the warehouse was cavernous, smelling of diesel, rust, and salt water. Standing in the center of an empty shipping bay, surrounded by four more armed thugs, was Marcus Vance.

Marcus was holding a silver cigar cutter, looking entirely relaxed until the heavy doors slammed open. When he saw Dominic—and more importantly, saw Serena walking right beside him—a triumphant, greasy smile spread across his face.

“Well, well, well,” Marcus laughed, spreading his arms wide. “The knight in shining armor actually brought the princess to the slaughter. I didn't think you were that stupid, Valetti.”

Dominic stepped forward, placing himself squarely between Serena and Marcus. His voice was dangerously calm. “Your little harbor stunt is over, Marcus. Clear your men out of my port before I lose my patience.”

“Your port?” Marcus scoffed, snapping his cigar cutter shut. “Nothing in Miami belongs to you exclusively, Dominic. Not until debts are paid. And Harold Caldwell left a twenty-million-dollar hole in my syndicate's ledgers. Since old Harold is broke, his lovely daughter is going to sign over the remaining deeds to her mother’s trust fund.”

Marcus pointed a finger directly at Serena.

“Sign the papers, sweetheart,” Marcus sneered. “And your boyfriend gets to walk out of here alive.”

Serena stepped out from behind Dominic’s shoulder.

Marcus blinked, taken aback by her sudden, unyielding posture.

“My mother’s trust fund was legally dissolved five years ago,” Serena said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the empty warehouse. “There is nothing to sign. My father is broke. And you are standing in a federal customs zone shaking down citizens for fraudulent debts.”

Marcus’s face flushed red with anger. “You little bitch—!”

“You’re finished, Marcus,” Dominic interrupted coldly.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone, tapping the screen once on speaker.

A crisp, official voice echoed through the warehouse loudspeaker system. “Federal Task Force on Organized Financial Crime. Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for extortion, racketeering, and interstate wire fraud. Federal agents are securing all perimeter exits. Do not resist.”

Marcus’s face drained of every drop of color. He spun around, looking frantically toward the warehouse doors.

Outside, the wail of approaching sirens filled the air, accompanied by the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen federal law enforcement vehicles pulling up to surround the perimeter.

“You... you set me up,” Marcus whispered, horror dawning in his eyes.

“I told you,” Dominic said, stepping forward as federal agents flooded through the open doors, weapons drawn, subduing Marcus’s guards in seconds. “I’m a businessman. Not a gangster.”

As Marcus Vance was shoved to the concrete floor in handcuffs, Serena let out a long, slow breath. The storm had finally broken.
