Chapter 1 - The Shadow Over St. Jude’s

The heavy silence of the luxury suite felt colder after the bedroom door clicked shut behind Audrey. Sebastian Ror stood frozen in the center of the room, staring at the dresser where her diamond-encrusted wedding band sat beside an untouched glass of crystal champagne.
His phone continued to vibrate in his palm. The screen glowed white in the dim candlelight, displaying an urgent message from his senior legal council, Thomas Vane: Emergency notice. The hospice protection has been challenged by the Waterfront Redevelopment Coalition. Order filed ten minutes ago.
Sebastian’s dark eyes narrowed into slits. The ink on the marriage certificate was barely dry, yet someone inside his inner circle or the city council had moved with terrifying speed to strike at the one thing Audrey Whitaker had traded her freedom to protect.
He walked out into the living area of the penthouse suite. Audrey stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the rain-slicked skyline of Boston, wrapped tightly in a dark velvet robe. Her pale hands were crossed over her chest, holding herself together against the chill of the night.
"You don't need to check your phone," Audrey said without turning around. Her voice was quiet, stripped of all color, yet steady. "You already know."
Sebastian stepped closer, his tailored suit jacket unbuttoned, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the cream carpet. "The injunction didn't come from my office, Audrey."
She turned her head slightly, her profile outlined by the distant city lights. "Does it matter? The coalition wouldn't dare file an emergency challenge on our wedding night unless they knew you weren't truly backing St. Jude Hospice. They smelled blood in the water before we even left the reception."
"St. Jude’s will not be touched," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a register that made men in his syndicate tremble. "I gave my word. The contract stands."
"Your word was built on the premise of punishment," Audrey said softly, turning to face him fully. Hazel eyes, clear and unshrinking, met his dark gaze. "You married me to make me pay for Catherine’s silence. Do you think the men who want that waterfront property don't know how fragile a marriage built on hate really is?"
Sebastian felt a sharp, unfamiliar tension coil in his stomach. For fourteen months, his grief over his sister Catherine’s tragic death had been his sole compass. Catherine had disappeared from his life during the final stages of her terminal illness, leaving him to tear the eastern seaboard apart searching for her. When he finally found her grave at St. Jude’s Hospice, he had discovered that Audrey Whitaker—the facility’s director—had been by her side until her last breath.
He had believed Audrey hid Catherine out of spite, or worse, to use her as leverage against the Ror syndicate. He had weaponized his vast wealth and criminal influence to force Audrey into a political marriage, offering her hospice immunity only in exchange for total control over her life.
“Catherine made me promise,” her words echoed in his mind. “That I would not tell you where she was.”
"Who filed the challenge?" Audrey asked, breaking his train of thought.
Sebastian glanced down at his phone, swiping through the legal attachment Thomas had sent. His jaw hardened into iron. "Julian Mercer."
Audrey took a breath, her chest heaving slightly beneath her robe. "Mercer... your chief financier."
"My former financier," Sebastian corrected coldly. "Julian thinks because he controls thirty percent of the redevelopment fund, he can force my hand while I'm distracted by our union."
He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out an encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a number.
"Marcus," Sebastian commanded the moment the call connected. "Bring the car around to the private subterranean entrance. Rouse Thomas and meet me at the harbor warehouse in twenty minutes."
He ended the call and looked back at Audrey. She hadn't moved.
"Stay here," Sebastian instructed, his tone brisk and authoritative. "The penthouse is secured by my personal detail. No one enters or leaves until I return."
"I am coming with you," Audrey said calmly.
Sebastian scoffed, a dark, dismissive sound. "This isn't a board meeting, Audrey. It's the waterfront. Julian Mercer operates with politicians in the daylight and hitmen in the dark."
"And St. Jude’s is my home!" Audrey snapped, stepping directly into his personal space, her eyes blazing with a fierce, quiet passion he had never seen in her before. "Thirty-seven terminally ill patients are lying in those beds right now, Sebastian! If Mercer’s men move on that building tonight while you play mob boss in a warehouse, my people will be thrown into the street in the rain! I am not sitting in this cage waiting for you to decide their fate!"
Sebastian stared down at her. Most women—most men—cowered when he bared his teeth. Yet here she stood, wearing no jewelry, no wedding dress, stripped of all protection, defying him without a tremor in her hands.
Something shifted in the air between them—a dangerous, electric thread of awareness that neither of them acknowledged.
"Put on warm clothes," Sebastian said quietly after a long silence. "If you make a sound while I am handling Mercer, I will lock you in that car myself."
May you like
"Deal," Audrey replied without hesitation.
Ten minutes later, they descended into the private elevator shaft in silence, bound for a war that had been engineered long before they walked down the aisle.
