Chapter 4 - The Gala and the Glass Slipper

The Annual Lombardy Syndicate Gala was held in a glass ballroom overlooking the Chicago skyline. It was an arena where rival families forged alliances over crystal flutes of champagne and concealed weapons under silk tuxedos.
Mara stood beside Gabriel, wearing a custom emerald-green satin gown that clung flawlessly to her full curves, cascading down into a sweeping train. Her chestnut hair fell in soft, elegant waves over her shoulders, and around her neck hung a vintage emerald necklace—a Moretti family heirloom that Nonna Elena had personally insisted she wear.
Gabriel looked breathtakingly lethal in a double-breasted velvet tuxedo. His hand remained glued to the curve of Mara’s waist, his grip firm, possessive, and protective.
"You look like a queen," Gabriel whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin, sending shivers down her spine. "Every man in this room is staring at you, and I am five seconds away from starting a war just to blind them."
Mara flushed, adjusting her glove. "Keep your jealousy in your pocket, Don Moretti. We're here to play a role."
"It stops being a role when I can't keep my eyes off you, Mara," he murmured back, his hazel eyes darkening with intent.
The illusion of a peaceful evening shattered when Lucia Castiglione approached them, flanked by her father, Don Carmine Castiglione—a brutal rival mob boss who had been eyeing Gabriel’s territory for years.
"Gabriel," Don Carmine sneered, his eyes flicking dismissively over Mara. "I see you brought your... little distraction. I didn't realize the Moretti family had fallen on such hard times that you choose your women from the local soup kitchens."
Lucia smirked behind her wine glass. "Careful, Papa. She might drop flour on your shoes."
The room around them went deathly quiet. Several underbosses turned to watch.
Gabriel’s expression flattened into pure, terrifying ice. He took a slow step forward, but Mara caught his arm, stepping smoothly in front of him.
"Don Castiglione," Mara said, her voice clear, confident, and echoing across the quiet circle. "I run a business that feeds three hundred people a day with honest work. I lift fifty-pound sacks of grain every morning before you even wake up to plot against your neighbors. If my hands are dusty, it’s from honest labor—not from washing the grease off blood money."
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered elite.
Don Carmine turned purple with rage, stepping toward Mara. "You insolent little—"
Before Carmine could finish his sentence, Gabriel moved like a strike of lightning. He stepped between them, his hand clamping around Carmine’s wrist in a vise-like grip, forcing the older Don back with terrifying physical dominance.
"Touch her or speak to her like that again, Carmine," Gabriel growled, his voice a low, horrific rumble that made even veteran hitmen flinch, "and I will erase the Castiglione name from this city before sunrise."

Carmine swallowed hard, backing away as Gabriel’s guards subtly shifted their suit jackets to reveal holstered firearms. Lucia looked terrified, realizing her father had just been completely humiliated.
Gabriel turned back to Mara, his anger instantly vanishing as he looked into her eyes. He took her hand, kissing her knuckles gently in front of the entire underworld. "Shall we dance, my love?"
