Chapter 7 - The Shadows Stir

Two weeks passed smoothly.

The estate settled into a quiet, peaceful rhythm. My days were filled with organizing Matteo's feeding schedules, coordinating with his new team of vetted pediatric nurses, and managing the daily operations of the estate's fifty-person staff.

Lily thrived in her new environment. She spent her afternoons playing in the rose garden with her nanny, or sitting in Rocco's grand library drawing pictures of butterflies while Rocco worked at his mahogany desk.

A strange, beautiful dynamic had formed between Rocco and my daughter.

The terrifying mafia boss, who barely spoke ten words to his highest-ranking captains, would sit quietly for twenty minutes every evening letting Lily show him her drawings, listening to her explain the complex lives of garden caterpillars with absolute patience.

And as for Rocco and me... a quiet, intense warmth had begun to grow between us.

We spent late nights together in the third-floor study, feeding baby Matteo while discussing household budgets, estate security, and the future. He was protective, fiercely intelligent, and surprisingly gentle beneath his hardened exterior.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, while Lily was asleep in our suite, I walked down to the estate's subterranean archive room to retrieve old inventory ledgers from Mara's personal estate.

The basement corridor was dimly lit, lined with vaulted brick walls and reinforced steel doors.

As I swiped my silver key card against the reader of the archive door, I heard muffled voices echoing from down the hallway—near the high-security holding cells where high-level estate business was conducted.

I didn't mean to eavesdrop. But the mention of my name made me freeze in my tracks.

"...Clara Vance is becoming a liability, Rocco," a harsh, sharp male voice spoke through a cracked steel door.

It was Dominic Vane—Rocco's chief financial advisor and long-time family lawyer.

"Clara is the safest element in this house, Dominic," Rocco's deep voice replied, cold and unyielding.

"She’s an outsider!" Dominic argued passionately. "She's a civilian teacher from Milwaukee! You've given her master silver clearance! She has access to the financial ledgers, the panic rooms, the inner vault! The other syndicate families in New York are already asking questions about why a former maid is managing the Moretti household!"

"Let them ask," Rocco said flatly. "Their opinions do not govern my home."

"Rocco, listen to reason!" Dominic pleaded, his tone rising with frustration. "The Cross family hasn't surrendered quietly! Evelyn's father, Senator Arthur Cross, is mobilizing a federal grand jury investigation into your shipping docks! They are looking for any weakness in your circle to launch an indictment! If they find out Clara was the one who intercepted the child, they will subpoena her! She will be forced to testify under oath!"

A long, heavy silence followed.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I pressed myself flat against the cold brick wall, holding my breath.

"Clara will not be subpoenaed," Rocco spoke, his voice dropping into a register that was terrifying in its absolute certainty.

"How can you be so sure?" Dominic demanded.

"Because," Rocco said softly, "before Senator Cross can file his indictment tomorrow morning, I am making Clara Vance my legal wife."
