Chapter 4 - THE DARKNESS IN THE ARCHIVE

The emergency red backup lights kicked on a second later, casting a long, bloody hue across the white-tiled floor and turning Julian’s sharp features into something resembling a cinematic villain.
I spun around, reaching behind me for the service console, but Marcus was already gone.
The heavy swing door leading back toward the kitchen rattled violently, its brass hinges still vibrating from his exit.
"Don't move," Julian commanded, his hand shooting out to grab my wrist as I made a instinctive move to follow.
His grip was firm, warm, and surprisingly steady.
"He’s not running away," Julian muttered, his eyes scanning the dim corridor. "He’s going for the terminal in the private office behind the kitchen. That’s where the encrypted draft of the contract is stored on our local server."
"How do you know that?" I asked, pulling my wrist back gently, though I didn't try to run.
"Because Marcus isn't just an independent contractor," Julian said, his jaw clenching as he pulled a sleek corporate smartphone from his pocket. The screen was dark. Dead. "Someone jammed the local frequency the moment he stepped out. That wasn't a corporate translator’s move. That was intelligence-level tradecraft."
He looked down at me, the red emergency light catching the sharp angle of his nose and the deep, searching expression in his eyes.
"Your mother sent you here, didn't she?" Julian asked, his voice losing its boardroom edge and turning into something raw and desperate. "She knew this acquisition was happening. She knew Marcus was placed in my firm six months ago. That’s why you took a double shift at this specific restaurant tonight."
"I told you, my mother is sick!" I snapped back, my frustration finally boiling over the terror. "She spends her days staring at a blank wall in a rented apartment in Columbus, Ohio! She doesn't know anything about multi-national shipping conglomerates, she doesn't know who you are, and she certainly didn't send me here to play spy!"
Julian stared at me for a long, agonizing moment.
He reached out slowly—not to grab me, but to touch the edge of the small silver necklace resting against my collarbone.
It was a simple silver pendant shaped like an open book, a gift my mother had given me on my eighteenth birthday.
Julian’s fingers brushed the metal, and his hand was actually shaking.
"Our grandmother gave that exact pendant to Clara on her sixteenth birthday in Munich," Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "She had them custom-made by a silversmith in the old town. There are only two of them in existence."
My breath hitched.
I looked down at the small silver book, then back up at the billionaire CEO who was staring at me not as an employee, not as an intruder, but as if a ghost had just walked out of the past and stood in front of him.
"Prove it," I whispered, my voice trembling. "Prove to me that my mother is who you think she is."
Julian didn't answer with words.
Instead, he grabbed my hand, pulled me away from the kitchen doors, and dragged me toward the private service elevator at the end of the corridor—the one marked Authorized Personnel Only.
He pressed a hidden panel beside the keypad, punched in a six-digit code using his thumbprint, and the heavy metal doors slid open instantly.
Inside wasn't a standard elevator car.
It was a private, wood-paneled subterranean transit capsule that dropped straight down beneath the restaurant into the historic wine cellars of downtown Manhattan—cellars that hadn't been used for wine storage in forty years, but housed something far more valuable: the physical paper archives of Julian’s family empire.
As the elevator doors closed behind us, cutting off the noise of the restaurant entirely, Julian pressed another button, plunging us into total silence.

"We’re going to find the file from 1998," Julian said, his eyes locked on mine as the car descended into the dark earth. "And when we open it, you’re going to see the name your mother used before she disappeared. Because the man who tried to kill her back then... is the same man who just helped Marcus hack my company tonight."
