Chapter 3 - The Ledger Her Father Left Behind

Nico read the message twice.
"No."
Maribel stared at him.
"I haven't even said anything."
"You don't need to."
"My sister is in danger."
"Which is exactly why you're not walking alone into whatever address they sent."
"They specifically said—"
"I don't care what kidnappers specifically said."
"They didn't say they kidnapped her."
Nico pointed at the photograph.
"They followed her."
"Then we find her."
"We will."
Maribel called Sofia.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
Her hands began shaking.
Nico took the phone gently.
"Maribel."
"I told her to stay home tonight."
"This isn't because of anything you did."
"You don't know that."
"I know blaming yourself wastes time."
That sounded harsh.
It was also exactly what Maribel needed.
She inhaled slowly.
"Fine. What do we do?"
Nico called Luca.
Within five minutes, Bellante security began tracking Sofia's phone, checking traffic cameras, contacting the doorman at her building, and tracing the anonymous message.
Maribel paced.
"What ledger?"
Nico looked at her.
"The message says Salvatore's ledger."
"I don't have one."
"Maybe they think you do."
"Why?"
Gabriel had said her father kept records.
Maribel suddenly remembered something.
Not an object.
A memory.
Her mother in the kitchen after Salvatore's funeral.
A cardboard box.
Elena crying.
Maribel had been twelve.
Sofia had been seven.
Their mother had taken several of Salvatore's belongings to the basement storage room.
One item stood out.
A thick brown accounting book wrapped in plastic.
At the time, Maribel assumed it belonged to Elena's bookkeeping work.
She had never thought about it again.
Until now.
"Nico."
He saw her expression.
"What?"
"My mother."
Thirty minutes later they were driving toward Queens.
Nico refused to let Maribel go alone.
Luca followed in another vehicle.
Maribel called Elena.
No answer.
Her anxiety increased.
"Why isn't anybody answering tonight?"
Nico drove faster.
Elena Rivera lived in the same modest brick house where Maribel and Sofia had grown up.
The porch light was on.
Front door closed.
No broken windows.
Luca checked the perimeter.
Clear.
Nico entered first.
Maribel ignored his instruction to wait.
"Mom?"
Nothing.
Then a voice came from the kitchen.
"If you brought that handsome boss of yours into my house at three in the morning without warning me, I hope he likes coffee."
Maribel nearly collapsed.
Elena appeared wearing a robe.
She looked from Maribel to Nico to Luca.
Then frowned.
"What happened?"
Maribel hugged her.
Hard.
Elena immediately understood this was not an ordinary visit.
"Where's Sofia?"
"We're looking for her."
Elena pulled back.
"What does that mean?"
Maribel showed her the photograph.
Her mother's face drained.
Then Maribel showed her the message.
BRING SALVATORE'S LEDGER.
Elena sank into a chair.
That reaction answered the question before Maribel asked.
"You know about the ledger."
Elena closed her eyes.
"Mom."
"I hoped nobody would ever ask for it."
Nico remained respectfully near the doorway.
Maribel sat across from her mother.
"Dad wasn't a refrigeration repairman."
Elena looked up sharply.
"Who told you?"
"A man named Gabriel Torres."
Elena whispered something in Spanish.
Maribel leaned forward.
"Tell me the truth."
Her mother was silent for a long time.
Then she began.
Salvatore Rivera had been an accountant for Vittorio Bellante.
Not because he wanted money.
Because the legitimate company paid better than anything else available to a young immigrant father with two children.
He promised Elena he would work only on legitimate books.
For years, he did.
Then he found duplicate accounts.
Money moving through shell corporations.
Invoices tied to illegal shipments.
Payments hidden inside charitable foundations.
When Salvatore confronted Vittorio, he discovered something unexpected.
Vittorio hadn't authorized them.
Someone inside the Bellante organization was using his infrastructure.
Salvatore began secretly copying records.
"He knew people would die if the wrong men learned about it," Elena said.
"Why didn't he go to police?"
"He didn't know which police officers were being paid."
Maribel thought of every crime film she had dismissed as unrealistic.
Apparently her childhood had existed beside one.
"What happened?"
Elena's voice trembled.
"He planned to give the evidence to federal investigators."
Nico's expression changed.
"But someone found out."
Elena nodded.
"Three days before the meeting, your father died."
Maribel looked at the table.
Highway accident.
Truck.
Closed case.
"So it wasn't an accident."
"I never knew for certain."
"You lied to us."
"I protected you."
"By letting me believe he died because somebody lost control of a truck?"
Elena's eyes filled.
"You were twelve."
"I'm thirty-two now."
"And you were safe for twenty years."
Maribel stood.
"Until tonight."
Elena flinched.
Maribel regretted it immediately.
But before she could apologize, Nico spoke.
"Mrs. Rivera. Where is the ledger?"
Elena stared at him.
"You look like Vittorio."
Nico's face softened.
"You knew my grandfather?"
"Unfortunately."
A surprising response.
Elena stood.
"Come."
She led them downstairs.
The basement looked almost exactly as Maribel remembered.
Old holiday decorations.
Storage boxes.
A sewing machine.
Elena moved toward a metal shelving unit.
She removed three boxes.
Behind them was a narrow panel.
Maribel stared.
"You built a hiding place?"
"Your father did."
Inside was an old steel cash box.
Elena unlocked it.
Empty.
Everyone froze.
"No," Elena whispered.
She searched again.
Nothing.
"The ledger was here."
Nico crouched.
"No damage."
Luca examined the lock.
"Opened with a key."
Elena stared.
"Only I have one."
Maribel thought of Sofia.
"Mom."
Elena looked at her.
"Did Sofia know?"
Silence.
That was answer enough.
"Mom."
"She found me looking at it once."
"When?"
"Two months ago."
Maribel's heartbeat accelerated.
"What did you tell her?"
"That it was your father's."
"Did she read it?"
"I don't know."
Maribel closed her eyes.
The photograph.
Sofia leaving her apartment.
Maybe she had not been taken because she was leverage.
Maybe she was part of the puzzle.
Nico's phone rang.
Luca answered instead.
Security had found Sofia's car.
Abandoned under an elevated train line in Brooklyn.
Driver's door unlocked.
Phone inside.
No Sofia.
Maribel grabbed her coat.
They drove immediately.
The location was nearly deserted.
Police had not been contacted yet because Nico wanted to preserve control of the scene.
Maribel hated that logic.
She also understood it.
Sofia's car sat beneath yellow streetlights.
Her purse remained on the passenger seat.
Phone in the center console.
No blood.
No signs of struggle.
Luca searched the trunk.
Nothing.
Maribel opened the glove compartment.
Inside lay a small folded note.
Her name was written on it.
Mari.
Only Sofia called her that.
Maribel unfolded it.
If you're reading this, don't trust the person who says Dad died protecting Bellante.
Maribel's breathing stopped.
Nico read over her shoulder.
His face hardened.
The note continued.
Dad wasn't protecting Bellante.
He was protecting us FROM Bellante.
Maribel slowly turned toward Nico.
Neither spoke.
Then Luca called from behind the car.
"There's something else."
He held a small flash drive.
It had been taped beneath the rear bumper.
One word was written on it.
SAL.
They returned to Nico's penthouse.
Luca used an isolated laptop.
No network connection.
No risk.
The flash drive contained twenty-seven files.
Scanned accounting ledgers.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
And a video.
Date:
Three days before Salvatore Rivera's death.
Maribel clicked it.
Her father appeared on screen.
Alive.
Younger.
Terrified.
She covered her mouth.
Salvatore looked directly into the camera.
"If Elena or my daughters ever see this, it means I failed."
Maribel began crying before she could stop herself.
Nico stood beside her.
Salvatore continued.
"The man stealing from Vittorio Bellante is not an outsider."
Nico leaned closer.
"He sits at Vittorio's table."
Salvatore looked away as if someone had made a sound nearby.
Then returned to the camera.
"I have proof. But if anything happens to me, never trust—"
The video froze.
The file ended.
Maribel stared.
"No."
Luca checked.
"Corrupted."
"Recover it."
"I'll try."
Maribel wiped her face.
One of the scanned documents caught her attention.
A list of payments.
She enlarged it.
Names.
Dates.
Companies.
Near the bottom was a handwritten notation.
A.M.
She pointed.
"Who is A.M.?"
Nico did not answer.
Maribel looked at him.
His face had gone pale.
"Nico?"
He stood very still.
"Anthony Moretti."
"Who?"
"The man my family believed ordered your father's death."
Maribel's stomach dropped.
"But Gabriel said Anthony Rossi owns Rossi Maritime."
Nico looked at her.
"Rossi isn't his real name."
Before Maribel could respond, the apartment intercom buzzed.
Security downstairs spoke through the speaker.
"Mr. Bellante, there's a woman here."
Nico looked toward the monitor.
"Who?"
A pause.
"She says her name is Sofia Rivera."
Maribel rushed toward the screen.
Her sister stood in the lobby.
Alive.
Alone.
And holding Salvatore's missing ledger.
May you like
Then Sofia looked directly into the security camera and said four words.
"Don't let Nico downstairs."
