Chapter 6 - The Audit of Truth

All eyes snapped toward the entrance as I stepped into the brilliant light of the Lawson family study. My posture was impeccably upright, my expression completely serene, holding an iPad displaying a fresh, downloaded financial and genetic audit trail that Marcus had sent me just five minutes prior.

Christopher froze midway across the room, his chest heaving, his expensive Brioni suit now looking rumpled and pathetic. He stared at me as if I were a specter risen straight from the underworld.

“V-Victoria?” he stammered, his voice cracking horribly. “What... what are you doing here?”

“I never miss a good board meeting, Christopher,” I said smoothly, walking past him without sparing more than a cold, dismissive glance. I stopped in front of Evelyn Lawson, who straightened her posture, looking at me with a mixture of profound humiliation and cautious respect.

“Victoria,” Evelyn began stiffly, attempting to salvage a shred of her aristocratic dignity. “This... this is an abhorrent private family matter. You have no business—”

“Actually, Evelyn, I have every business,” I interrupted, tapping the screen of my iPad. “As the sole controlling majority shareholder and legal owner of Vextor Dynamics, as well as the holder of the secondary liens on this very estate—which you quietly mortgaged to bail out David Lawson’s failing real estate ventures eighteen months ago—every single financial asset, property deed, and corporate account you own currently passes directly through my legal purview.”

Michelle shrieked, clutching the twins tighter as if she feared I might physically repossess the infants themselves. “You can't do that! That’s illegal! We have rights!”

“Rights?” I turned my gaze toward her, my tone dropping to a sub-zero chill that made her flinch. “Michelle, you spent three years playing the loyal best friend while systematically embezzling corporate funds through a shell company registered in Tucson under David Lawson’s alias. I have the wire transfers right here. Not only do you have zero legal claim to any assets, but your accomplice David is currently being picked up by federal agents on wire fraud and corporate conspiracy charges as we speak.”

Christopher stumbled forward, falling to his knees right in front of me, his hands trembling as he reached out as if to grab the hem of my trousers. The arrogant, untouchable CEO who had sneered at me over the phone just days ago was completely gone, replaced by a broken, desperate shell of a man.

“Victoria... please,” Christopher choked out, tears finally spilling over his eyelids, tracking hot paths down his cheeks. “I was an idiot. I was blind. She manipulated me, David ruined me... please, you have the company, you have the money, take everything, just... help me fix this. We can start over. Please.”

I looked down at him, my expression entirely devoid of anger, pity, or satisfaction. There was only the quiet, profound emptiness of closure.

“Start over, Christopher?” I asked softly. “With what? You spent years telling me I was cold, calculating, and incapable of giving you a family. You traded me for warmth, for legacy, for biological proof of your own worth. And look what your precious legacy bought you: a house of cards built on lies, incestuous betrayal, and financial ruin.”

I turned my back on him, walking toward the French doors that led out into the cool Arizona night.

“The locks on your apartment and your corporate office were changed ten minutes ago,” I called back over my shoulder without breaking my stride. “Enjoy your new family, Christopher. Make sure you keep the receipts.”
