Chapter 5 - The Last Dance

The gala continued late into the night, filled with laughter, champagne toasts, and sweeping orchestral music.

By eleven o'clock, Henry was sitting comfortably at the head table, surrounded by old family friends, holding a glass of sparkling water, his face radiant with a peace he hadn't known in a year.

Clare stepped out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking the illuminated gardens of the Jefferson Hotel. The night air was cool, smelling of wet autumn leaves and fresh pine.

She leaned against the stone balustrade, looking up at the clear, star-lit sky, taking a deep, contented breath.

Footsteps sounded against the stone floor behind her.

Ethan walked out onto the terrace. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, holding it over one shoulder, his black bow tie unfastened, hanging loosely around his unbuttoned collar.

He walked up to the railing, stopping right beside her.

"He's happy, Ethan," Clare said softly, looking at him with a warm smile. "He's really, truly happy."

Ethan didn't look at the gardens. He looked at her.

The moonlight caught the green satin of her dress, highlighting the soft curve of her throat, the dark curls of her hair, and the gentle, beautiful warmth of her eyes.

"He is," Ethan whispered, his voice low and thick with emotion. "And it's because of you."

"I just taught him the box step," Clare murmured humbly.

"No," Ethan said, taking a step closer, setting his tuxedo jacket on the stone balustrade. "You didn't just teach him to dance, Clare. You gave him his life back. You looked past the grumpy, stubborn exterior of an old man and saw a broken heart that needed help."

He reached out, his big, warm fingers gently cupping her jaw, his thumb softly tracing her cheekbone. The touch was so tender, so incredibly intense, that Clare’s breath hitched completely.

"And you saved me, too," Ethan whispered, his dark eyes burning with raw, unfiltered truth.

"Ethan..." Clare breathed, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"For a year, Clare, I've been drowning," Ethan confessed softly, his gray-dark eyes holding hers locked in place. "I thought if I worked twenty hours a day, if I controlled every meeting, if I managed every detail of my father's life, I could keep the world from falling apart. I was so terrified of losing him... so terrified of feeling the pain..."

He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers, his warm breath mingling with the cool night air between them.

"And then I walked into a community center studio on a rainy Tuesday night," Ethan murmured, his voice cracking slightly. "And I saw a woman holding my father's hand, telling him not to use his elbows as weapons."

Clare let out a soft, breathless laugh, tears welling up in her eyes as her hands reached up, her fingers sliding into the dark hair at the nape of his neck.

"Section four, paragraph four," Clare whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.

"What does section four, paragraph four say?" Ethan asked softly, his lips hovering mere millimeters from hers.

"It says the teacher isn't allowed to fall in love with the student's son," Clare murmured, a radiant, dimpled smile breaking across her face.

Ethan smiled—that rare, devastatingly handsome smile that transformed his entire face.

"I don't care about the contract," Ethan whispered.

He leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against hers.

The kiss was warm, deep, and filled with an explosive, sweeping passion that made the surrounding world dissolve into complete nothingness. Clare gasped against his mouth, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck, pulling his broad, solid chest flush against hers, leaning her entire body weight into his strength.

Ethan wrapped his broad arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet, holding her against him as if she were the only anchor in a storm.

When he finally pulled back, his eyes were shining with a brilliant, unconditional devotion that took her breath away.

"Dance with me, Clare," Ethan murmured, holding out his hand.

From inside the ballroom, the distant, sweet sound of a slow jazz ballad floated out through the open terrace doors.

Clare looked into his eyes, smiled, and placed her hand securely in his. "I thought you didn't dance, Mr. Caldwell."

"I don't," Ethan whispered, pulling her smoothly into his arms, guiding her into a slow, perfect rhythm under the moonlight. "I only dance with you."
