Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

The single word dropped into the smoky room like a lead weight. The poker game froze instantly. The cards remaining in the deck were left un-dealt, and the heavy plastic chips clinked softly as players pulled their hands away from the center of the table. Donovan blinked, his bloodshot eyes shifting away from Paige to focus on the head of the table.

Roman Gallow had not stood up. He had not slammed his fists against the wood or reached for a hidden firearm. He simply laid his cards face down on the green felt, perfectly aligned, and tilted his head.

“Release her wrist, Donovan,” Roman said softly.

Donovan laughed, though a nervous twitch betrayed his bravado. “Relax, Roman. Just having a little fun with the help. Teaching her some manners. Girls like this forget their place when you bring them into a room like—ahh! Ahh, fuck!”

Paige gasped as Roman moved. The motion was so fast it blurred in the dim lighting. Roman did not walk around the table; he vaulted across the corner, his chair screeching backward against the hardwood floor. Before Donovan could finish his sentence, Roman’s heavy hand clamped down over Donovan’s fingers where they gripped Paige’s injured wrist.

A sickening crunch echoed through the room.

Donovan screamed, releasing Paige’s arm as he slumped sideways, his face turning the color of curdled milk. “My hand! You broke my fucking hand!”

“You touched property that was under active debt collection,” Roman stated, his voice devoid of any human warmth, sounding like a judge reading a death warrant. He did not let go of Donovan until the older man slid completely out of his chair and collapsed onto the Persian rug, clutching his fractured fingers and whimpering.

Paige stumbled backward, cradling her throbbing wrist against her chest. The pain was excruciating, but the sheer shock of what she had just witnessed rooted her to the spot. The other three poker players sat frozen, sweating profusely, staring down at the rug as if blood might soak through the fibers at any second.

Roman straightened his cuffs, adjusted his collar, and turned his dark, tired eyes toward Paige. The coldness in his gaze melted away by a fraction, replaced by an unsettling, clinical concern.

“Are you alright?” he asked, stepping closer.

“My wrist,” Paige managed to choke out through the pain, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. “He grabbed the exact spot where the tendon is torn.”

Roman’s expression hardened instantly. He looked down at Luca, who was already standing by the double doors with a flat expression. “Luca. Call Dr. Vance. Have him meet us in the private clinic downstairs immediately.”

“Boss, the game—” Luca started.

“The game is finished,” Roman interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. “Clear the room. Now.”

Within thirty seconds, the high-stakes poker table was completely abandoned. The frightened executives scrambled toward the exit, tripping over their own expensive shoes to escape the brutal atmosphere of the Gallow estate. Paige stood alone in the center of the smoke-filled room with Roman, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

“You didn’t have to break his hand,” Paige whispered, staring at the empty rug where Donovan had just been lying.

“In my world, debt comes with terms,” Roman replied smoothly, walking over to the wet bar and pouring a glass of plain ice water. He handed it to her, his fingers brushing hers with surprising gentleness. “If someone damages the collateral—and right now, your functioning hands are the only collateral I have to recover my six-thousand-dollar suit—they pay a penalty. Drink this.”

Paige took the glass, her hands trembling violently. “I’m not your collateral, Mr. Gallow. I’m a human being who made a mistake.”

“I know,” Roman said quietly, turning his gaze toward the floor-to-ceiling windows where the ocean waves crashed against the jagged cliffs outside. “Which is why you’re not scrubbing my floors or cleaning my gutters. Follow me. Let’s get that wrist looked at by a professional.”

As Paige followed him down a private, subterranean hallway away from the gambling rooms, she realized something terrifying: Roman Gallow wasn't just a ruthless mob boss running an empire of shadows. He was a man trapped in an endless cycle of debts, violence, and isolation—and somehow, through a spilled glass of ice water, she had just been pulled straight into the center of his world.
