Chapter 4 - The Storm at the Docks

As the weeks passed, my life completely transformed.

I began taking art classes at the local community center, something I had dreamed of since high school. Dominic watched me grow stronger, happier, and more radiant day by day. The cold, ruthless mafia leader found himself drawn to the brownstone earlier every evening, completely captivated by my laughter and quick spirit.

However, a man in Dominic Rossi’s position could never truly escape the violent shadows of his world.

A rival syndicate boss from Brooklyn—a man named Salvatore Moretti—had been trying to push into Dominic’s shipping terminals along the West Side docks. Moretti saw Dominic’s growing attachment to me as a rare weakness in an otherwise impenetrable leader.

One rainy Thursday afternoon, while Dominic was meeting with his captains downtown, a convoy of black SUVs pulled up outside the brownstone.

Gunfire shattered the quiet neighborhood.

Dominic’s guards fought fiercely, but Moretti’s men used heavy explosive charges to blow open the front iron gates.

I was in the second-floor library when the alarms blared. Panic seized my heart, but I refused to be the helpless girl from the diner ever again. I grabbed an iron poker from the fireplace, locking myself inside the reinforced study behind the desk.

The library doors burst open.

Salvatore Moretti walked in, holding a chrome handgun, a triumphant sneer across his scarred face. "Where is Rossi's little pet?"

"Right here," I said, stepping out from behind the desk, holding the heavy iron poker like a weapon.

Moretti laughed, stepping toward me. "You think you can stop me with a piece of iron, girl?"

Before Moretti could take another step, a deafening crash echoed from the main hallway.

Dominic burst through the shattered library doors like a force of nature. His coat was covered in rain, his eyes burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage.

"Moretti!" Dominic roared.

Moretti turned to shoot, but Dominic closed the distance in a fraction of a second. He grabbed Moretti's gun arm, twisting it until the metal clattered to the floor, and slammed the rival boss headfirst into the marble mantlepiece.

Moretti collapsed to the floor, unconscious and bleeding.

Dominic didn't even look at his fallen enemy. He turned to me, his chest heaving, his dark hair disheveled. He rushed across the room, pulling me violently into his arms, crushing me against his broad chest.

"Maya!" Dominic gasped, his voice trembling with a raw, desperate fear I had never heard from him before. "Are you hurt?! Tell me!"

May you like

I dropped the iron poker, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck, burying my face in his neck. "I'm okay, Dominic! I'm okay!"

Dominic held me so tightly I could barely breathe, his heart hammering wildly against my ribs. "If he had touched you... I would have burned this entire city to the ground."
