Chapter 6 - SUNRISE OVER THE ASHES

Six months later.

The warm breeze of the Mediterranean coast gently ruffled Mia’s hair. The air tasted of salt and freedom, a stark contrast to the smog and blood of Chicago. She sat on the terrace of a beautiful cliffside villa, sipping a glass of iced tea. On the table next to her lay the morning paper. The headline, translated from English, was bold and definitive: CHICAGO SYNDICATE CRUMBLES: VICTOR KANE AND WIFE INDICTED ON 40 COUNTS OF RACKETEERING AND MURDER.

Thanks to the encrypted USB drives Mia had anonymously mailed to the Department of Justice, the FBI had dismantled Victor’s entire operation. Left destitute, injured, and hunted by rival families, Victor and her mother had nowhere to hide. They had been arrested in a cheap motel, stripped of their wealth and their power. They would spend the rest of their natural lives in maximum-security solitary confinement.

Mia smiled, closing the newspaper. She had kept the ledger’s secret offshore accounts for herself—millions of dollars that her father had quietly siphoned away to ensure her future. She had used it to vanish completely, buying the villa under a new name, finally living the life her father had wanted for her.

The sliding glass door opened behind her. Daniel stepped out onto the terrace, carrying two plates of fresh fruit. His shoulder had fully healed, though the scars remained, and the harsh, lethal edge in his eyes had softened into something peaceful. He wasn't wearing a dark suit or a trench coat anymore; just a simple linen shirt and a genuine smile.

"Feds seized the last of the Belladonna properties today," Daniel said, setting the plates down and taking a seat beside her. He looked out over the sparkling blue ocean. "It's really over, Mia."

"It is," she agreed softly, reaching out to lace her fingers through his.

She wasn't invisible anymore. She wasn't running, and she wasn't hiding. She was the architect of her own destiny, standing in the light, surrounded by the warmth of a new beginning. Mia Carter had walked through the fires of the underworld and emerged untouched, a queen of her own peaceful empire.

"So," Daniel asked, squeezing her hand, his eyes bright with a hopeful future. "What do we do tomorrow?"

May you like

Mia leaned her head against his shoulder, watching the golden sunrise paint the horizon.

"Whatever we want," she whispered.
