Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Truth

By late afternoon, the storm over the Conti empire had officially settled.

Dominic had been stripped of his assets, his rank, and permanently exiled from the East Coast under penalty of death. The harbor was secure, the families were aligned, and Matteo’s absolute authority over Boston was cemented beyond question.

In the quiet sanctuary of the Conti Penthouse, the sun was setting over the ocean, painting the sky in fiery shades of pink, orange, and gold.

Penny stood near the balcony railing, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the ships glide across the harbor.

Behind her, the glass door slid open, and Matteo stepped onto the terrace. He had removed his jacket and tie, unbuttoning his collar, looking relaxed for the first time since she had met him.

He walked over, leaning against the railing beside her.

“The car is waiting downstairs, Penny,” Matteo said quietly, his dark eyes reflecting the golden sunset. “Leo will drive you home. Your apartment has been swept for bugs, a new security lock has been installed, and your job at the Velvet Room is waiting for you if you want it... as the new head operations manager.”

Penny looked at him, her heart giving a strange, fluttery squeeze.

“Operations manager?” she asked, a small smile touching her lips. “Does that mean I get to fire Jimmy again?”

“You can fire anyone you want,” Matteo smiled softly.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, elegant silver key card, setting it on the marble ledge between them.

“What’s this?” Penny asked.

“The master key to the penthouse,” Matteo said, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense tone that made the hairs on her arms stand up. “And a deed for the St. Jude facility. I bought the building this afternoon, Penny. Your mother’s care is free for life. Not as a bribe... but as a gift from a man whose life you saved.”

Penny looked down at the silver key, her eyes filling with warmth.

She didn't push it away this time.

She looked up into Matteo’s dark, handsome face—the man everyone in Boston feared, the man who controlled empires, yet had carried her through gunfire, bought her mother’s freedom, and looked at her as if she were the only woman in the universe.

“You’re insane, Conti,” Penny whispered, stepping closer to him until her shoes touched his leather loafers.

“Probably,” Matteo agreed softly, reaching out to gently tuck a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear. His fingers were warm against her skin. “Is that a problem?”

Penny looked up at his lips, then back into his fierce, unyielding eyes.

“Only if you think I’m going to spend my weekends sitting quietly while you play mob boss,” Penny challenged, a mischievous spark dancing in her eyes.

Matteo let out a deep, genuine laugh that echoed over the quiet harbor. He reached out, wrapped his broad arm around her waist, and pulled her firmly against his chest.

“I wouldn't expect anything less from the woman who poked me in the chest,” Matteo whispered.

And then he leaned down and kissed her.

The kiss was slow, deep, and intoxicating—filled with the heat of the storm they had survived together and the golden promise of everything yet to come.
