Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Own

The wedding was nothing like the suffocating, candlelit charade at Bellweather House months ago.

There were no superficial socialites whispering behind our backs, no forced smiles for cameras, and no secret regrets waiting to surface. It was intimate, powerful, and entirely ours.

Held on the sprawling coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific, the guest list was short: Alyssa standing beside me as maid of honor, radiant and beaming with genuine joy; Marcus and a handful of trusted colleagues standing as witnesses; and the vast, open ocean stretching out to the horizon as our only backdrop.

I wore a gown of minimalist, flowing white silk designed by my own studio—clean lines, unpretentious elegance, and absolute strength. Around my neck rested the sapphire pendant Darius had given me, and on my left hand, the band of deep-blue sapphires caught the afternoon sunlight, glowing with a rich, unyielding brilliance.

When Darius placed the final matching band on my finger during our vows, the seal was complete. Not a shackle, not a contract of submission, but a partnership between two equals who had looked into the abyss of betrayal and built something indestructible from the ashes.

The reception that evening took place in the glass pavilion overlooking the cliffs. There was no champagne toast filled with hidden confessions, no drunken slip-ups, and no lingering ghosts from the past. Just good food, warm laughter, music that drifted out into the salty night air, and the absolute certainty that every single step of the journey—even the pain, the betrayal, and the ruins of a broken engagement—had led me exactly where I was always meant to be.

Later that night, as the party wound down and the guests retreated to their quarters, Darius and I stood alone out on the glass balcony of our private suite.

The moon cast a silver sheen across the dark, rolling waves of the ocean far below. The night was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of pine and salt water.

Darius stepped up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and pulling me back against his chest. I leaned my head back against his shoulder, letting out a long, contented breath.

"Penny for your thoughts now, Mr. Vale," I teased softly, turning my face slightly to catch his profile.

Darius smiled, pressing a warm kiss to the crown of my head before resting his cheek against my hair.

"I was just thinking about how ironic life is," he murmured, his deep voice vibrating through us both. "Caleb Mercer spent his entire life scheming to secure a multi-million-dollar fortune by stepping on everyone in his way. And in the end, his greatest achievement was simply introducing you to me."

I laughed, a bright, genuine sound that carried out into the open night air. I reached up and intertwined my fingers with his, flashing the deep-blue sapphire band beneath the moonlight.

"He really did have terrible taste in everything," I agreed, turning in his arms to wrap my arms around his neck, looking up into his dark, steady eyes. "Except, of course, for how he drove me right out the door."

May you like

Darius chuckled, a low, resonant rumble, before lowering his head to capture my lips in a deep, sweeping kiss that tasted of home, victory, and an infinite horizon.

The past was buried. The lies were burned to ash. And the empire we built together was just beginning.
