Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Strike

Seventy-two hours later.

The headquarters of Apex Health Management occupied the top three floors of the Dominion Tower in downtown Richmond.

At 2:00 p.m., Daniel Bennett sat at the mahogany conference table in Executive Boardroom A. He wore his finest charcoal Armani suit, a dark blue silk tie, and his gold Patek Philippe watch—a watch he had bought himself three months ago after telling Claire he was taking a salary cut.

Across the table sat his chief attorney, Richard Sterling—a slick, silver-haired man with a forty-thousand-dollar smile—and Marcus Vance, the sixty-year-old CEO of Apex Health.

Daniel was pale. His eyes were bloodshot, and he had spent the last three days frantically calling Claire’s phone, only to be redirected to Evelyn Vance’s automated legal portal.

"Look, Marcus," Daniel said, offering a practiced, confident smile as he slid a leather folder across the table. "The Q3 logistics audit is completely clean. The minor delays in the Virginia Beach hospital deliveries were resolved as soon as Lauren Pierce took personal oversight of the account. We’re on track for twenty percent year-over-year revenue growth."

Marcus Vance adjusted his reading glasses, glancing over the numbers. "Good work, Daniel. The board was concerned about the rumor floating around regarding your personal situation. You know how sensitive our institutional investors are to leadership instability."

"It's nothing, Marcus," Daniel lied smoothly, waving his hand dismissively. "My wife is having a minor emotional episode over a miscommunication regarding a weekend business trip. My legal team is handling a private separation agreement. It won't impact my work in the slightest."

Before Marcus could answer, the double frosted-glass doors of Executive Boardroom A swung open without a knock.

Two uniformed officers from the Richmond Sheriff's Office stepped into the room, followed by Evelyn Vance and Claire Bennett.

The room went instantly, suffocatingly silent.

Daniel jumped out of his chair so fast his leather executive seat nearly tipped over backwards.

"Claire?" Daniel gasped, his face draining of all color. "What the hell is this? Richard, do something!"

Richard Sterling stood up, smoothing his jacket, his slick smile instantly turning into a defensive scowl. "Evelyn, what is the meaning of this theatrical display? This is a private corporate meeting. You cannot serve civil divorce papers in a private executive boardroom!"

"We aren't here to serve civil divorce papers, Richard," Evelyn Vance said smoothly, stepping aside as a third man entered the room—a sharp-faced agent wearing a gold badge pinned to his dark suit belt.

"I’m Agent David Miller from the Virginia State Corporation Commission's Financial Crimes Division," the man announced, his voice echoing cleanly across the high-ceilinged room.

Marcus Vance’s head snapped toward the agent. "Financial crimes? What are you talking about?"

Agent Miller pulled a heavy blue folder from his leather bag, setting it firmly on the mahogany table directly over Daniel’s Q3 report.

"An emergency freeze order was executed thirty minutes ago by the Richmond Circuit Court," Agent Miller stated. "Under state fraud statutes, we have seized all assets, bank accounts, and corporate filings associated with Apex Logistics LLC—a Delaware shell entity operating out of Virginia Beach."

Daniel’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the edge of the conference table to keep himself from falling.

"Apex Logistics?" Marcus Vance repeated, his eyes turning wide with sudden, terrifying realization. He glared at Daniel. "Daniel... what is he talking about?"

Claire stepped forward.

She looked at her husband. She didn't look angry. She didn't look hurt. She looked like a judge delivering a final, unappealable sentence.

"Three years ago, Marcus," Claire said, her voice calm, clear, and commanding, "Daniel created Apex Logistics LLC using seventy-five thousand dollars stolen from my family trust. He listed his mistress, Lauren Pierce—your regional logistics director—as the sole managing member. Since then, he has diverted over two point four million dollars in Apex Health hospital transport contracts into this entity, inflated the billing invoices by thirty percent, and pocketed the net profits."

"That’s a lie!" Daniel screamed, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch. "She’s crazy! She’s doing this because I asked for a divorce! She’s trying to ruin me!"

"We have the wire logs, Daniel," Evelyn Vance interrupted calmly, pulling a thick stack of certified bank records from her briefcase. "Every wire transfer from Apex Health to Apex Logistics LLC was co-signed by your digital signature key. And every payout from Apex Logistics was deposited directly into a joint offshore account held by you and Ms. Pierce in the Cayman Islands."

Marcus Vance slowly stood up from his chair. His face was purple with rage as he turned toward Daniel.

"Security!" Marcus roared into his desk intercom. "Escort Mr. Bennett out of this building immediately! Terminate his corporate access codes, lock down his office, and notify our legal counsel to prepare immediate criminal charges!"

Two large security guards stepped into the room, grabbing Daniel by his arms.

"Claire! Please!" Daniel sobbed, kicking his feet against the carpet as he was dragged toward the door, his polished Armani suit wrinkled and rumpled. "Claire, think about twelve years! Think about our house! Think about us! We can fix this! I love you!"

Claire stood perfectly still, watching her husband being dragged past the glass doors of his former empire.

She didn't feel a surge of joy. She didn't feel a flash of malicious triumph.

She simply felt the heavy, suffocating weight of twelve years of lies finally lifting off her shoulders, leaving behind clear, open sky.
