Chapter 11 - The Last Night Victor Moretti Had PowerVictor escaped at 6:14 p.m.

By 6:30, every Vale property was under lockdown.

By seven, federal agents had roadblocks around known Moretti locations.

By eight, Adrian understood Victor would not run.

Men like Victor did not disappear quietly when they believed one act of revenge could restore their pride.

“He’s coming here,” Elena said.

Adrian looked at her.

They stood in the security room beneath the Vale estate.

“Possibly.”

“Not possibly.”

She pointed toward the monitors.

“He wants me.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“He won’t get near you.”

“That’s what he wants you to think.”

“Elena—”

“He lost his company. His house. Dominic. His network.”

“And?”

“I’m the thing he thinks betrayed him.”

She understood her father better than anyone.

Victor would not prioritize survival.

He would prioritize punishment.

Gabriel entered.

“Federal agents want Elena relocated.”

Adrian nodded.

“Do it.”

Elena crossed her arms.

“No.”

Both men looked at her.

“No?”

“I’m not spending the rest of my life being moved whenever he threatens me.”

“This is not philosophical,” Adrian said. “He’s armed.”

“So are half the people in this house.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

Gabriel quietly backed toward the door.

Adrian noticed.

“Don’t you dare.”

“I’m getting coffee.”

“You don’t drink coffee.”

“I’m starting.”

He left.

Elena almost smiled.

Adrian did not.

“You can hate me later.”

“I don’t hate you.”

“I’ll physically carry you to the car if I need to.”

Her expression changed.

He regretted the words instantly.

“Elena.”

“That’s exactly what he would say.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“You’re right.”

She stared.

“I’m sorry.”

The anger in her face softened.

“Then stop protecting me by taking my choices away.”

“I don’t know how.”

The admission surprised both of them.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“I know how to eliminate threats. Control rooms. Lock doors. Move people.”

He looked at her.

“I don’t know how to love someone and accept that I can’t control what happens to them.”

Elena stopped breathing for a second.

“You said love.”

Adrian realized it too late.

He almost corrected himself.

Didn’t.

“Yes.”

She stared at him.

“Adrian…”

“You don’t have to say anything.”

“That’s convenient.”

“It’s survival.”

A laugh escaped her.

Even now.

Adrian stepped closer but left space between them.

“I love you.”

Her eyes filled.

“I don’t know when it happened.”

“I do.”

“When?”

“The airplane.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“You were terrified of flying and still made fun of me.”

“That’s not romantic.”

“It was for me.”

She wiped at one eye.

“I’m still figuring out who I am.”

“I know.”

“I can’t become someone’s whole life.”

“I don’t want you to.”

“I need school.”

“Go.”

“Friends.”

“Have them.”

“A career.”

“Build one.”

“Sometimes I need to tell you no.”

“I’m becoming painfully familiar with that.”

She smiled.

Then she whispered, “I think I love you too.”

Adrian’s composure disappeared for one heartbeat.

He reached toward her.

Stopped.

Elena saw the question.

She nodded.

He touched her face.

Gently.

Her eyes closed.

No flinch.

No fear.

Then the estate alarms erupted.

Gabriel’s voice came over the speaker.

“Perimeter breach!”

Adrian pulled Elena behind him.

The lights went out.

Emergency power activated.

Red security lamps filled the corridor.

“Adrian.”

“I know.”

Gunfire sounded outside.

Not close.

Yet.

Gabriel rushed in.

“South gate. Vehicle rammed through.”

“Victor?”

“Unknown.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Safe room.”

She nodded.

No argument this time.

Because choosing safety was still a choice.

They moved through the corridor.

Matteo joined them.

“Agents?”

“Four minutes out,” Gabriel said.

They reached the reinforced safe-room entrance.

Then smoke began pouring from the ventilation system.

Gabriel swore.

“They planned for this.”

A loud crash sounded upstairs.

Adrian realized the attack at the gate was distraction.

Victor knew the house.

Of course he did.

He had attended meetings there.

Dinners.

The wedding reception.

He knew service entrances.

Security patterns.

They moved toward the east exit.

A man appeared at the end of the hall.

Gabriel fired.

The intruder dropped.

Elena recoiled but kept moving.

They reached the ballroom.

Another blast shook the windows.

Matteo shouted, “Kitchen exit!”

They turned.

Victor stepped from the shadows.

Gun raised.

Everything stopped.

He looked terrible.

Blood stained the side of his shirt.

His shoulder wound had reopened.

But his eyes were sharp.

“Elena.”

She froze.

Adrian moved in front of her.

Victor laughed.

“You always were predictable.”

“Put the gun down.”

“You stole my daughter.”

“No.”

Elena stepped beside Adrian.

“I left you.”

Victor’s face twisted.

“You ungrateful little—”

“No.”

Her voice remained steady.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.”

“I gave you a name.”

“My mother gave me one.”

“You have nothing without me.”

Elena looked around the mansion.

At Adrian.

Matteo.

Gabriel.

Then back at Victor.

“I have myself.”

Victor raised the weapon.

Adrian moved.

Elena shouted.

A shot rang out.

Adrian hit the floor.

“Elena!”

Matteo screamed.

For one horrible second, Adrian thought she had been hit.

Then he saw Victor stumble.

Gabriel stood behind a column, weapon drawn.

Victor’s gun fell.

Adrian crossed the room and kicked it away.

Victor collapsed against the wall.

He was wounded in the leg.

Alive.

Elena stood several feet away, trembling.

Victor looked up at her.

“Help me.”

It was almost absurd.

The man who had terrorized her since childhood now sat bleeding on the floor asking his daughter for mercy.

Elena stared.

Victor extended a hand.

“You’re my daughter.”

She shook her head.

“You only remembered that when you needed something.”

“Elena…”

She crouched several feet away.

“You taught me family meant obedience.”

Victor breathed heavily.

“You taught me love meant fear.”

His face twisted.

“I did everything for you.”

“No.”

Elena stood.

“You did everything to own us.”

Sirens approached.

Victor looked toward the windows.

Panic entered his face.

“Elena, please.”

She stared at him.

For years she had dreamed about making him hurt.

About making him afraid.

Now that she finally could, revenge felt smaller than she expected.

She turned toward Adrian.

“Call an ambulance.”

Victor stared.

Adrian did too.

“You want him saved?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena looked back at her father.

“Because I don’t want his last lesson to be the one I keep.”

Federal agents stormed the mansion minutes later.

Victor Moretti was arrested for the second time.

This time under armed guard from three agencies.

He would not escape again.

As paramedics carried him toward the ambulance, he looked at Elena.

She did not look away.

But she did not follow.

The doors closed.

The vehicle left.

Then silence settled over the damaged estate.

Broken glass covered the ballroom.

Smoke drifted through the hallway.

Matteo leaned against the wall.

Gabriel inspected a bullet hole in an expensive painting.

“That’s unfortunate.”

Adrian looked.

“It was ugly.”

“I hated it too.”

Elena laughed.

Adrian turned toward her.

She was crying and laughing simultaneously.

He walked closer.

“Can I?”

She knew what he meant.

She nodded.

Adrian wrapped his arms around her.

Elena rested her head against his chest.

The first night they had stood in this house as husband and wife, she begged him not to touch her.

Now she held him tighter.

Not because she had nowhere else to go.

May you like

Because she chose to stay.

And Adrian finally understood the difference.
