Chapter 3 - The Trauma Suite at Scripps Memorial

By 3:45 A.M., the private obstetric trauma pavilion at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla was sealed under twenty-four-hour armed federal protective guard.
Two plainclothes security operators from Vance Sovereign Defense stood outside the double glass doors of Suite 402, checking the credentials of every passing physician. Inside the room, the rhythmic, high-pitched thump-thump-thump of the fetal Doppler monitor filled the quiet air with the sweetest music on earth.
Dr. Paul Sterling, Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and a lifelong personal friend of Arthur Vance Senior, looked up from the ultrasound diagnostic console, wiping the warm acoustic gel from Aloraâs stomach.
"The amniotic sac is intact, Thane," Dr. Sterling announced, his weathered face softening into an expression of profound, exhausted relief. "The placenta shows zero signs of abruption. Your daughterâs heart rate is a robust one hundred and forty-eight beats per minute. Alora suffered soft-tissue contusions across her ribs and scalp, but the pregnancy is completely viable. The baby is safe."
Alora let out a long, shuddering sob of pure, unburdened gratitude, her hand reaching out from the hospital bed.
I took her fingers between both of mine, pressing my lips against her bruised knuckles, bowing my head as a single, hot tear of holy vindication escaped my lashes.
"Thank you, Paul," I murmured.
The door to the private consultation suite hissed open.
Arthur Vance Senior strode inside, holding an unsealed, red-wax-stamped leather portfolio bearing the official gold seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.
Beside Arthur walked Special Agent Marcus Cole, carrying a heavy titanium forensic evidence drive.
Arthur pulled a leather armchair beside my seat, resting his hands over the carved silver eagle head of his walking cane.
"Thane, Alora," Arthur rumbled softly, his gravelly voice carrying fifty years of unassailable legal authority. "While you were accompanying Alora in the ambulance, Agent Coleâs cyber-forensic unit executed emergency warrants against Corrine and Sloanâs personal cloud drives and bank safe-deposit boxes."
Agent Cole tapped his tablet, projecting the decrypted evidentiary audit directly onto the suiteâs wall-mounted consultation monitor:
THE STERLING FAMILY DEFALCATION AUDIT (DOCKET 912-ALPHA):
The Premeditated Home Invasion: Encrypted WhatsApp logs proving Corrine and Sloan tracked Thaneâs flight itinerary for three weeks, purchasing forged industrial master keys and hiring a disbarred notary forty-eight hours earlier to execute fraudulent property transfers.
The Transnational Extortion: Proof Sloan Sterling had accumulated $4,800,000.00 in unhedged offshore gambling debts in Macau, having pledged Thaneâs commercial shipping titles as collateral to an Asian loan cartel (Dragon Crest Logistics LLC).
The Motherâs Conspiracy: Corrine Sterling had forged Thaneâs signature on eighteen corporate dividend directives over thirty-six months, siphoning $32,400,000.00 into an unlisted domestic shell account in Nevada (Corrine Heritage Preservation Trust).
Alora gasped, her hand flying to her throat as she stared at the screen. "Thirty-two million dollars...? Thane, you were already giving her fifty thousand dollars a month!"
"Greed does not possess a ceiling, Alora," Arthur Vance Senior said, his slate-gray eyes colder than an Arctic blizzard. "Corrine believed that because she carried Thane for nine months, she owned his soul, his company, and his future. She viewed Aloraâs pregnancy as an existential threat to her financial pipeline."
Arthur tapped the master legal brief resting on his knees.
"Under the Uniform Lineal Disinheritance Covenant of your family charter, Thane," Arthur stated with surgical precision, "an act of armed felony violence committed by an ascendant or collateral family member against a lineal heir results in the Immediate, Total Revocation of All Living Allowances, Trust Allocations, and Residential Licenses."

I stood up from my chair, my posture straight, commanding, and radiating absolute sovereign resolve.
"Arthur," I said softly, every word sharp as surgical diamond. "Evict them from the Rancho Santa Fe estate at sunrise. Empty their accounts. Cancel their credit lines. By noon, I want their names erased from this city."
