Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

Two months passed in a golden blur.
The Romano Estate, once a quiet, solemn fortress of shadows and business meetings, transformed into a place filled with life and laughter.
Lily’s laughter echoed down the long hallways as she played hide-and-seek with Enzo—who turned out to be a soft-hearted giant when dealing with seven-year-olds. A private tutor came every morning, praising Lily's sharp mind and artistic talent.
For Emily, the transformation was even deeper. She no longer woke up in a panic at 4:00 AM. Her skin regained its healthy color, her eyes sparkled, and under the gentle care of the estate, she blossomed into a woman of quiet, commanding beauty.
And then there was Vincent.
Despite his overwhelming responsibilities running the syndicate, Vincent made a point to be home every evening by 6:30 PM for dinner. He sat at the head of the dining table, listening with genuine interest as Lily recounted her lessons, and engaging Emily in deep, intelligent conversations about literature, art, and the city.
The fake marriage was slowly, undeniably turning into a real family.
One chilly evening in late November, Vincent returned home earlier than usual. He walked into the ground-floor drawing room to find Emily sitting on the rug near the roaring fireplace, helping Lily assemble a complex wooden puzzle of the solar system.
Vincent stood in the doorway for a moment, watching them. The firelight flickered across Emily’s face, catching the warm amber highlights in her hair. He felt a sharp, sweet ache in his chest—a feeling he had spent his entire life suppressing.
"Daddy!" Lily squeaked, jumping up from the rug.
The word hung in the air like a silver bell.
Lily froze mid-stride, her hands flying over her mouth, her eyes wide with terror. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to call you that! Please don't be mad!"
Vincent’s heart slammed against his ribs. He immediately dropped his briefcase, walked across the room, and scooped Lily up into his arms, holding her close against his chest.
"Hey," Vincent whispered softly into her hair. "Look at me, Lily."
Lily looked at him, her lip trembling.
"You can call me whatever you want," Vincent said gently, his eyes shiny with unshed tears. "You can call me Vincent, you can call me Boss... or you can call me Daddy. I would be honored."
Lily let out a ragged breath and hugged his neck tightly. "Daddy," she giggled softly.
Over Lily's shoulder, Vincent’s eyes met Emily’s. She was standing by the fireplace, her hands resting over her heart, tears running freely down her cheeks, a look of profound, beautiful love filling her eyes.
Vincent felt a barrier inside his soul shatter completely. The contract was gone. The deal was meaningless. He loved them both with every fiber of his being.
Later that night, after Lily was in bed, Vincent was standing in his study, going over financial reports, when the heavy oak door opened.
Emily stepped inside. She wore a simple silk robe, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders.
"Vincent?" she called quietly.
He looked up from his desk. "Is everything okay? Is Lily asleep?"
"Lily is fine," Emily said, stepping further into the room and closing the door behind her. She walked across the Persian rug until she was standing directly in front of his desk. "I came to talk to you."
Vincent stood up, feeling a sudden, nervous flutter in his chest that he hadn't experienced since he was a teenager. "What is it, Emily?"
She reached out, taking his hands into hers across the polished wood. "The contract we signed... it says we review our arrangement after two years."
"Yes," Vincent said softly.
"I don't want to wait two years," Emily said, her voice clear and unwavering. "And I don't want a contract anymore, Vincent."
Vincent held his breath. "Emily..."
"I love you," she whispered, looking straight into his eyes. "Not because you saved us from Vane. Not because of this house. I love you because of who you are. I love the way you look at my daughter. I love the way you protect people. I want to be your real wife."
Vincent came around the desk in two strides. He framed her face with his large hands, his eyes burning with intense, overwhelming passion.
"Are you sure, Emily?" he rasped, his voice rough with emotion. "My world is dark. It's dangerous—"
"You are my light, Vincent," she interrupted softly.
May you like
Vincent leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.
The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with months of built-up longing, tenderness, and absolute devotion. Emily wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling herself flush against his hard body, melting into his embrace as the last lingering shadows of their pasts dissolved into the warmth of the room.
