Chapter 3 - The Midnight AmbushBy 11:00 PM, a blinding November rainstorm was hammering against the slate roofs of Pittsburgh.

Inside the Westbridge Family Center, the lights were off, save for a single desk lamp shining in the director's office.

Mara Voss sat behind her desk, frantically stuffing armfuls of paper files into an industrial shredder. Beside her stood Dr. Julian Vance—a sharp-featured man in his fifties wearing a expensive camel-hair coat, his face twisted in a mask of controlled panic.

"You let him read the binder?" Julian spat, grabbing Mara by her upper arm. "Are you out of your mind, Mara? Carter Hale is a shark! He has three forensic teams on retainer!"

"He caught me off guard, Julian!" Mara cried out, trying to pull her arm away. "He was supposed to give us the donation check and leave! How was I supposed to know he was going to sit on the floor with the girl?"

"It doesn't matter," Julian said coldly, pulling a set of car keys from his pocket. "Richard is already aware of the situation. We're moving the girl tonight. I have a transport van waiting in the rear alley. She’s being transferred to the Erie facility under a Level-4 lockdown code. By sunrise, her digital file will be purged from the state database."

"And if Carter comes back tomorrow morning with a court order?" Mara asked, her voice shaking.

"He'll find an empty room," Julian sneered. "He has no legal standing. He thinks she's just some random orphan. He'll throw some money at another charity and forget about her in a week."

Before Mara could answer, a loud, thunderous crash echoed from the front lobby.

The heavy glass entrance doors of the facility shattered into a thousand pieces as a heavy-duty battering ram smashed through the frame.

"WHAT THE—" Julian gasped, pulling a small revolver from his coat pocket.

The heavy oak door of the director's office was kicked off its hinges with explosive force, slamming into the wall with a deafening bang.

Through the dust and rain, five heavily armed private security operatives dressed in black tactical gear flooded into the room, their weapon-mounted flashlights blinding Julian and Mara.

"DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!" Marcus Vance’s voice boomed through the small office.

Julian’s revolver was knocked from his hand by a tactical baton before he could even raise his arm. He was slammed face-first onto the desk, his hands pinned behind his back in plastic zip-ties.

Mara shrieked, dropping her armful of files as she backed into the corner, raising her hands in terror.

From the shadowed hallway, a tall figure stepped into the room.

Carter Hale walked slowly through the dust. He wore a heavy black trench coat, his dark hair slicked back with rain, his face an unreadable mask of absolute, lethal stone.

He didn't look at Mara. He didn't look at Julian, who was groaning against the desk.

He walked straight over to the industrial shredder, reached out his hand, and hit the emergency stop button. He pulled out the half-shredded paper file, looking at the top line.

Subject: PARKER, EMILY — INTAKE ID: 4409-MAYA.

Carter turned slowly to face Dr. Julian Vance.

"Julian," Carter said softly, his deep voice carrying a terror that made the room freeze.

"Hale... listen to me," Julian stammered through his bloodied lip. "You're committing a federal crime! This is a state-regulated facility! You can't break in here with armed men—"

Carter stepped forward, grabbed Julian by the lapels of his camel-hair coat, and lifted the six-foot man entirely off his feet, slamming him back against the concrete wall with enough force to crack the plaster.

"Where is she?" Carter whispered, his face inches from Julian’s terrifyingly pale eyes.

"You... you don't know what you're doing..." Julian gasped for air. "Richard will ruin you... he has the board... he has the voting shares..."

"Where is my sister's daughter, Julian?" Carter roared, his voice echoing through the empty building like a thunderclap.

Julian’s eyes went wide with absolute, staggering horror. "You... you know?"

"I know everything," Carter said, his grip tightening until the fabric of Julian's coat began to tear. "I know about the Erie facility. I know about the state subsidy fraud. And I know that you kept my niece in a cage for four years so Richard could try to steal my company."

Carter dropped Julian onto the floor like a sack of trash. He turned to Marcus.

"Keep them here until the State Police arrive," Carter ordered firmly. "Where is Emily's room?"

"Third floor, West Wing, Room 304," Marcus replied, handing Carter a heavy brass key card.

Carter didn't waste another second. He turned on his heel and sprinted up the concrete stairwell toward the third floor.
