Chapter 4 - The Chicago Connection

While Vanessa languished in a county jail cell awaiting trial, Daniel and I turned our attention to the true mastermind behind the financial collapse of my father’s trust: Richard Sterling.
Richard thought he was safe in his penthouse suite in downtown Chicago, hiding behind a wall of shell companies and high-priced corporate attorneys. He believed that because Vanessa was the one who had physically forged the signatures, he could claim total ignorance and keep the one point eight million dollars he had stolen from my family.
He was wrong.
Two weeks before Vanessa’s formal indictment hearing, Daniel and I flew to Chicago, accompanied by Julian Hale and a team of federal financial investigators.
We convened in a private conference room at the Federal Plaza in Chicago. Sitting across from us was Richard Sterling, looking suave and unbothered in a tailored charcoal suit, accompanied by his senior defense lawyer, Marcus Vance.
"Miss Bennett... or should I say, Mrs. Vance," Richard said with a patronizing smirk, pouring himself a glass of sparkling water. "It's a shame about what happened to your sister. Vanessa was always a bit... unhinged. But I assure you, my investment firm had no knowledge that the funds she transferred to us were unauthorized."
"Is that so, Mr. Sterling?" Daniel asked smoothly, opening a thick leather binder. "Then perhaps you can explain these encrypted text logs recovered from Vanessa's phone during forensic extraction."
Daniel tapped a button on his laptop. An audio file played clearly through the conference room speakers.
Vanessa's recorded voice: "Richard, my sister’s wedding is in three weeks! The trustee is going to audit the estate account! If Claire finds out two million is missing, I’m going to prison!"
Richard's cool, calculated voice: "Calm down, Vanessa. Keep Claire distracted. Create a scene, make her look hysterical so the family questions her mental state during the trust review. Give me three more weeks, and the funds will be safely settled in our offshore fund. Do what you have to do to buy time."
Richard’s smug expression instantly vanished. His glass of water froze halfway to his lips.
His lawyer, Marcus Vance, turned slowly to look at his client, his eyes wide with alarm. "Richard... did you record these conversations?"
"Vanessa recorded them," I said calmly, leaning across the table. "She was cruel, Richard, but she wasn't completely stupid. She kept receipts of every single instruction you gave her because she knew you would try to dump her the moment things went wrong."
Julian Hale slid a secondary document across the table. "This is a formal federal freeze order on all accounts associated with Sterling Capital LLC. The FBI’s financial crimes division has already seized your Chicago penthouse and your private offshore accounts in Grand Cayman."
"You... you can't do this!" Richard slammed his hands onto the table, his face flushing dark red. "I am a licensed fund manager! Vanessa voluntarily invested that money!"
"She invested stolen capital under your direct coercion and instruction," Daniel countered, his voice like iron. "That makes you a co-conspirator to federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and money laundering. You're not looking at a civil lawsuit, Richard. You're looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
Richard looked at his lawyer frantically. "Marcus! Tell them something! Fix this!"
Marcus Vance closed his notebook, stood up, and buttoned his jacket. "My retainership with you is terminated as of this moment, Richard. I advise you to hire a public defender."
Without another word, the lawyer walked out of the conference room, leaving Richard alone, hyperventilating in his expensive suit.
I stood up, adjusting my coat, looking down at the man who had manipulated my sister and tried to ruin my life.
"Vanessa destroyed my dress because she wanted to hurt me," I said softly. "But you tried to destroy my family’s entire legacy out of pure, pathetic greed. You two deserved each other. But now, you get to share something else."

"What's that?" Richard whispered, his voice trembling with genuine terror.
"A trial," I said.
