Chapter 6 - The Night the Gates Opened

Vincent turned Romano Estate into a fortress.

Nobody entered.

Nobody left.

Federal agents took copies of Gabriel's ledger, but they needed time.

Vescari didn't intend to give them any.

That evening, Elena found Vincent standing beside the courtyard window.

"You should leave," he said.

"Where?"

"Safe house."

"With Sofia?"

"Yes."

"And Diesel?"

Vincent looked toward the dog.

"Apparently that's not negotiable."

Elena almost smiled.

Then her expression became serious.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Doing what?"

"Risking everything."

Vincent looked at her.

"Because your husband died trying to stop men who believed fear made them untouchable."

"That isn't the whole answer."

No.

It wasn't.

Vincent had spent years building walls around himself.

Sofia had walked through them as easily as she had walked toward Diesel.

And Elena—

Elena reminded him there were things outside power worth protecting.

"I don't want your daughter growing up believing men like Vescari always win."

Elena studied him.

"Neither do I."

At 2:13 a.m., the estate lost power.

Emergency lights activated.

Then gunfire sounded near the south gate.

Vincent grabbed his weapon.

Marco shouted through the radio.

"Multiple vehicles!"

Vescari's men had arrived.

Elena ran toward Sofia's room.

Empty.

Her heart stopped.

"Sofia!"

A bark sounded downstairs.

Diesel.

They found Sofia in the hallway.

The dog stood in front of her.

Vincent reached them.

"Safe room. Now."

They moved.

Then glass shattered.

A man entered through the side corridor.

Diesel lunged.

The intruder fled backward.

Vincent locked Elena and Sofia inside the safe room.

"Stay here."

Elena grabbed his arm.

"Come back."

Vincent looked at her hand.

Then her face.

"I will."

The attack lasted eleven minutes.

Police and federal teams were already moving toward the estate.

Vescari's plan had been desperate.

He entered through the east courtyard.

The same place Diesel had once terrified everyone.

Vincent found him there.

Vescari smiled.

"All this because of a dead accountant."

"No."

Vincent stepped closer.

"Because you thought his family would stay afraid forever."

Vescari raised his weapon.

Diesel appeared behind Vincent.

The bulldog growled.

Vescari froze.

Vincent remembered the scars.

"You're the one."

Vescari smiled.

"The dog?"

Diesel's growl became deeper.

"He wouldn't stop barking after Gabriel disappeared."

Vincent understood.

Vescari had hurt Diesel.

The animal hadn't forgotten.

Vescari aimed.

Diesel moved.

Vincent shouted.

The dog struck Vescari before he could fire accurately.

The shot went into the courtyard wall.

Vincent disarmed him.

Federal agents arrived seconds later.

Vescari was arrested on the same stone path where Sofia had first approached Diesel.

By sunrise, it was over.

Almost.

Elena came outside.

Sofia ran toward Diesel.

The dog had a shallow wound on his shoulder from broken glass.

Sofia immediately began crying.

"Dee."

The bulldog licked her hand.

"He's okay," Vincent said.

"You promise?"

"I promise."

She hugged him.

Not Diesel.

Vincent.

He froze.

Then slowly wrapped one arm around the child.

Elena watched.

For the first time since entering Romano Estate, she saw something nobody else seemed to notice.

Vincent Romano wasn't feared because he felt nothing.

He was feared because he had spent years making sure nobody discovered how much he could feel.

Days later, Vescari's network began collapsing.

Arrests followed.

Officials resigned.

Old cases reopened.

Gabriel Castellano's death was officially reinvestigated.

Elena finally received the truth she had been denied.

But one question remained.

What would happen when the danger was gone?

Because Elena had never planned to remain in Vincent Romano's world.

May you like

And Sofia had already begun calling his mansion "Dee's house."
