Chapter 6 - Exposure at the Gala

The Annual Cole Meridian Philanthropic Gala was held at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.

It was the most exclusive event of the New York social season. Over five hundred of the country’s most powerful CEOs, politicians, and socialites filled the grand ballroom, glittering under massive crystal chandeliers.

The media was in a frenzy, expecting Marcus Cole to look disgraced after his fiancée's high-profile arrest two weeks prior.

Instead, Marcus walked into the ballroom looking like a sovereign king.

And walking on his arm was me.

I wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown designed by Oscar de la Renta, my dark hair styled in an elegant updo, sparkling emerald earrings dangling from my ears. Beside us, looking like a little angel in a white lace dress and shiny patent-leather shoes, was Lily, held safely in Marcus’s strong right arm.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom as camera flashes exploded like lightning.

"Is that the maid?" a high-society woman whispered nearby.

"Look at her... she's breathtaking!" another murmured.

Marcus ignored the whispering crowd, holding my hand firmly in his as he led us to the head table where his mother, Eleanor Cole, sat in a velvet armchair.

Eleanor was a regal, elegant woman in her seventies, with snowy white hair and sharp brown eyes. She looked at me, then at Lily, and slowly stood up.

"Mother," Marcus said smoothly. "This is Maya Vance. And her daughter, Lily."

I braced myself for judgment, knowing how protective high-society mothers could be of their billionaire sons.

Instead, Eleanor stepped forward, took both of my hands in her warm grip, and smiled with deep, genuine warmth.

"So you are the brave young woman who saved my foundation," Eleanor said, her voice filled with emotion. "And this is the brilliant little girl who found the truth."

Eleanor leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Lily’s cheek. Lily giggled, offering Eleanor a small plastic bunny from her purse. Eleanor took it like it was the crown jewels of England.

"Thank you, Maya," Eleanor whispered, looking into my eyes. "Not just for saving my charity... but for bringing life back into my son’s eyes. I haven't seen him look this happy since he was a boy."

Later that evening, Marcus took the stage in front of five hundred guests and fifty news cameras.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus’s voice echoed through the auditorium speakers. "Tonight, we celebrate justice. The people who tried to steal from the vulnerable have been stripped of their power and face full prosecution under the law."

He looked directly toward our table, his eyes finding mine across the glowing room.

"Many people thought my company was saved by high-priced lawyers or digital firewalls," Marcus continued, his tone rich with emotion. "The truth is, my life was saved by honesty. By a woman of incredible strength and a little girl with purple shoes who walked through a door she wasn't supposed to open."

The room erupted into applause as Marcus stepped off the stage, walking straight toward me, taking my hand in front of the entire world.
