Chapter 11 - The Siege of the Estate

The front double doors of the Moretti mansion exploded inward, sending shards of heavy oak and decorative glass flying across the pristine Persian rug of the foyer.
Through the billow of smoke and freezing autumn air, four men in black tactical gear stepped into the house, their suppressed submachine guns raised, sweeping the corners with military precision.
Dominic stood at the top of the grand staircase, half-concealed by the shadows of the second-floor landing.
He didn't wait for them to spot him.
Bang! Bang!
Two clean, deliberate shots echoed through the cavernous foyer. The lead tactical operative dropped instantly, his body slumping heavily against the marble steps.
“Sniper on the landing! Second floor!” one of the remaining gunmen screamed, immediately opening fire, riddling the banister with a hail of 9mm rounds that splintered the wood into a million pieces.
Dominic ducked behind the reinforced stone pillar of the hallway, reloading his pistol with cool, surgical efficiency. He knew every inch of this house. He knew where every shadow fell, where every floorboard creaked, and how to use the architecture of his own fortress against intruders.
Downstairs, the gunmen fanned out, searching for the panic room entrance.
“Clear the kitchen! Check the basement access!” shouted the team leader, a scarred veteran of Chicago’s underworld named Bruno.
Bruno and his remaining two men rushed down the hallway toward the kitchen, kicking open doors and shattering interior windows. They reached the cellar door leading down to the wine vault.
“Found it! The vault door is sealed!” Bruno yelled into his tactical radio. “Bring up the thermite charges! Burn the lock off!”
Inside the subterranean panic room beneath the cellar, Isabella held Leo and Lily tightly against her chest in the pitch-dark alcove. The muffled sound of shouting voices and heavy boots stomping directly above them vibrated through the concrete floor.
Lily buried her face in Isabella’s sweater, trembling softly. “Mommy… are the bad guys here again?”
“No, sweetheart, your father is going to take care of it,” Isabella whispered fiercely, though her own hands were shaking as she stroked her daughter’s hair.
Beside them, six-year-old Leo sat completely silent, his jaw clenched, holding a small wooden toy car his father had carved for him—holding it like a shield.
Above ground, the sound of a thermite torch hissed violently against the steel vault door, emitting a blinding white glare that crept under the cellar threshold.
Dominic moved through the second-floor service corridor, dropping silently from the ceiling access hatch directly into the kitchen behind the unsuspecting gunmen.
“Drop the torch,” Dominic’s voice cut through the room like a razor blade.
Bruno spun around, raising his rifle, but before he could pull the trigger, Dominic’s boot kicked the weapon upward, sending a stray round into the kitchen ceiling. With a brutal, swift elbow strike to Bruno’s jaw, Dominic dropped the team leader to the floor.
The remaining two operatives turned to fire, but Dominic swept his leg, taking out the legs of the first man, and brought the butt of his pistol down hard against the temple of the second, rendering them both unconscious.
In less than three minutes, the elite Chicago extraction team had been neutralized.

Dominic stood over the unconscious men, his breathing heavy, his chest heaving as he stared down at the sizzling thermite torch on the floor. He kicked it aside, extinguishing the flame, and walked over to the basement cellar door, pulling it open.
“Isabella!” Dominic called down into the darkness. “It’s over! You can come out now!”
