Chapter 2 - Revocation

Norah was awake. She was sitting cross-legged on her bed, her desk lamp casting a warm circle of light over a notebook where she had been drafting dorm checklists.
She looked up when I knocked softly on her open door. "Hey, Dad."
"Hey, kiddo. Still up?"
"Just... calculating how many storage bins I need for Slusher Hall," she said, offering a small, fragile smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Virginia Tech dorms aren't exactly known for walk-in closets."
I walked in and sat on the wooden chair by her desk. "You don't have to pretend you're fine."
Norah set her pen down. Her shoulders dropped an inch. "I'm not mad about the paper, Dad. I know it's just ink. It’s... why did Grandma look at me like that? Like she was happy I was hurting?"
The question sat between us, heavy and ugly.
"Your grandmother is a bitter woman, Norah," I said, keeping my voice quiet and steady. "When people build their entire lives on resentment, watching someone else earn something through hard work feels like an insult to them. It has nothing to do with who you are. It has everything to do with what she failed to be."
Norah swallowed hard. "Trish posted the video, didn't she? Maya from track texted me. She said Connor looked like a feral raccoon."
"Trish made a mistake," I said. "A very expensive one."
"Dad, don't cause a giant fight. Please. I just want to pack my stuff and leave in August."
"There isn't going to be a fight, Norah," I told her, standing up and kissing the top of her head. "There's just going to be an adjustment. Get some sleep."
By 6:00 a.m., I was down in the kitchen brewing a fresh pot. At 7:30 a.m., my scheduled email to Ridgemont Academy went out.
At 7:42 a.m., Arthur Vance replied with characteristic administrative urgency:
*Mr. Whitfield,*
*We have received your notice. As today is the June 1 enrollment lock date, Mrs. Miller’s account will flag as delinquent upon the 8:00 a.m. automated batch processing. Per board policy, accounts without an authorized payment method or deposit on file by 12:00 p.m. forfeit their reserved seat to the waiting list. I will contact Mrs. Miller immediately.*
I closed my phone and poured a cup of coffee.
Across town in Rockville, Trish Miller’s Monday routine was rigid. She woke at 7:15, spent thirty minutes complaining on Facebook about traffic or local taxes, and left her house at 8:15 to drive Connor to school before heading to her part-time receptionist job at an aesthetician's office.
At 7:45 a.m., my phone buzzed on the granite counter.
It wasn't a call. It was a forwarded screenshot from April, who lived three houses down from Trish on Canterbury Lane.
*April: Blake, what did you do? Trish just ran out of her front door without shoes on, screaming at Doug in the driveway. She got in her Tahoe and peeled out so hard she took out her own recycling bin.*
I took a slow sip of coffee.
Ten minutes later, the violent rumble of a V8 engine roared down my quiet cul-de-sac. Tires chirped against the asphalt as Trish’s white Chevy Tahoe swung into my driveway, parking crookedly across the apron. The driver-side door slammed back against its hinge with a metallic crack.
Trish didn't bother knocking. She threw my front door open so hard the brass handle punched a clean half-inch dent into the drywall of my foyer.
"Blake!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into a jagged register. "Blake, what the hell is this?!"
She marched into the kitchen, brandishing her iPhone like a weapon. Her hair was pulled into a half-undone knot, she wore oversized pink fleece pajama bottoms with no shoes, and her face was blotched red with pure fury.
May you like
"Good morning, Trish," I said, leaning against the counter. "Take off your shoes. You're tracking gravel onto the hardwood."
"Don't give me your smug engineer crap!" she screamed, thrusting the screen within two inches of my nose. "Arthur Vance just called me! He said our auto-draft failed because you took your card off the account! He said Connor’s seat is going to the waitlist if seven thousand four hundred dollars isn't wired by noon! Did you lose your mind?!"
