Chapter 3 - The Public Exposure

By Friday morning, the sun rose over a freezing Chicago, but the storm inside the Peterson empire was just beginning.
I woke up early after only three hours of sleep. My mind was crystal clear. When I looked into the guest room and saw Lily sleeping peacefully, the red mark on her cheek now a dark purplish-red, a cold resolve settled deep in my bones.
The Petersons had built their entire identity on optics. To the Chicago high-society elite, Frank Peterson was a philanthropic pillar, Carol was a patron of the arts, Megan was an "influential luxury designer," and Mark was the golden-boy heir to a respected financial dynasty.
They lived and died by their reputation.
So I decided to strike them where it hurt most: their public image.
While Zoe was at the courthouse filing the emergency custody papers and the temporary restraining orders, I sat down at Zoe’s kitchen island with Maya.
Maya was a social media manager for a digital marketing firm in Chicago. She looked at me with fire in her eyes.
“Chloe,” Maya said, opening her tablet. “The legal system takes time. But the internet? The internet moves at the speed of light. They want to call Lily a brat? They want to pretend they’re the victims? Let’s tell the real story.”
“Do it,” I said.
We wrote a detailed, factual, and emotionally devastating post. We attached three images:
The clear, high-res photo of Lily’s bruised five-year-old cheek, taken under medical light at the hospital.
A copy of the formal pediatric medical report from Northwestern Memorial Hospital citing child abuse.
A screenshot of the text message Mark had sent me at 12:45 AM: “Megan was just correcting her. Stop being dramatic, apologize to my family, and bring Lily back or you’ll leave this marriage with nothing.”
We uploaded it to Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok with a simple title:
"The Cost of a Peterson Thanksgiving: What happens when your sister-in-law slaps your 5-year-old child across the face, and your husband tells you to apologize."
We tagged Megan’s boutique design firm (Megan Peterson Designs), Frank’s wealth management firm (Peterson & Associates), and Carol’s charity organization (The Gold Coast Children’s Foundation—ironically, a charity for underprivileged youth).
Maya hit Publish.
Within two hours, the post went from twenty shares to two thousand.
By noon, it had exploded across Chicago social circles like a thermonuclear detonation.
The contrast between Carol’s high-society charity work for children and her daughter physically striking a five-year-old child—backed up by official hospital documentation and Mark’s own callous text messages—was too scandalous to ignore.
Comments began flooding in by the thousands:
"Absolute monsters! She hit a 5-year-old over turkey?!"
"Look at the text from the husband! 'Apologize to my family'?! What kind of spineless coward lets his sister abuse his daughter?!"
"Boycott Megan Peterson Designs immediately! She deleted her Instagram page!"
"Carol Peterson is on the board of the Children’s Foundation?! REMOVE HER IMMEDIATELY!"
By 2:00 PM, local news outlets picked up the story. The Chicago Tribune and WGN News published articles online: "Prominent Gold Coast Family Facing Child Abuse Investigation Following Thanksgiving Incident."
My phone didn't stop ringing, but this time it wasn't just Mark.
At 3:30 PM, Zoe returned to the penthouse, carrying a thick leather briefcase. She had a look of absolute triumph on her face.
“Phase One complete,” Zoe announced, throwing a stack of court-stamped documents onto the table. “The judge granted the emergency ex-parte temporary restraining order. Megan Peterson cannot come within 1,000 feet of you or Lily. Mark has been granted temporary supervised visitation only—one hour a week at a court-designated facility—until a full psychological evaluation is completed.”
“What about Megan?” I asked.
“The police went to the brownstone two hours ago,” Zoe smiled grimly. “Megan was escorted out in handcuffs in broad daylight. Right in front of all their wealthy Gold Coast neighbors. There were three news cameras outside because of Maya’s viral post.”
I gasped. “She was arrested?”
“Booked for misdemeanor child battery, with the State Attorney considering upgrading it to felony assault given the age of the victim and the severity of the bruise,” Zoe confirmed. “Carol tried to stop the police officers at the door and was nearly arrested herself for obstruction of justice.”
Just then, my phone chimed with a news alert.
I opened the video link attached to the alert. It was a live broadcast from outside the Cook County police station.
The footage showed Megan Peterson, wearing designer sunglasses and hiding her face with a leather handbag, being led into the station in handcuffs by two police officers. Behind her, Frank Peterson was frantically screaming at reporters to put their cameras away, while Carol stood by her luxury SUV, weeping hysterically into a handkerchief.
Mark was standing behind his father, looking utterly broken, his suit rumpled, his hair messy, his eyes darting around in blind panic as reporters shouted questions at him:
"Mark! Did you really tell your wife to apologize after your sister hit your daughter?!"
"Mark! Is it true Peterson & Associates is under SEC investigation?!"
I watched the screen, expecting to feel a pang of sadness or regret for the man I had spent seven years loving.
Instead, I felt nothing. The man on that screen was a stranger—a small, pathetic man who had allowed his family’s toxic vanity to destroy everything good in his life.
Suddenly, Zoe’s desk phone rang. It was her senior assistant.
“Zoe,” the assistant’s voice echoed over the speaker. “Frank Peterson is downstairs in the lobby. He’s begging to come up. He says he wants to make a deal.”

Zoe looked at me, an eyebrow raised. “What do you think, Chloe? Do we let the king of the Petersons beg?”
I leaned toward the speaker. “Send him up,” I said. “It’s time Frank Peterson learned what happens when he mess with a scholarship girl from Ohio.”
