Chapter 4 - The Locks on Madison Avenue

By Monday morning, the news of the canceled vacation had devolved into a state of panic inside the Vance family.

For forty-eight hours, Richard, Margaret, and Ashley had bombarded my phone with over eighty missed calls, dozens of frantic text messages, and tearful voicemails ranging from outraged demands to pathetic pleas for an explanation.

I ignored every single one of them.

Instead, I spent the weekend taking Emily to a peaceful private spa resort in upstate New York, watching her laugh as she received a gentle prenatal massage, her color returning, her back pain easing under proper rest and care.

On Monday at 8:30 AM, Richard Vance arrived at his legal consulting office on Madison Avenue, desperate to find a way to fix his financial standing before his monthly vendor bills came due.

When he stepped off the elevator on the twelfth floor, he found two uniformed private security officers standing outside the glass double doors of Vance & Associates Consulting.

The heavy glass doors were locked. A bright white legal notice was taped securely across the door handles.

Richard blinked, his chest tightening. "What is the meaning of this? Move aside, I am the senior partner here!"

He pulled out his brass key and tried to insert it into the lock.

It wouldn't fit. The keyway had been completely replaced with a digital biometric scanner.

"Mr. Richard Vance?" one of the security guards asked, checking a clipboard.

"Yes! I am Richard Vance! Why are my office doors locked?!"

The guard handed him a thick blue legal packet. "Sir, as of 6:00 AM today, the commercial lease guarantee provided by Vance Logistics Global has been formally revoked due to material non-payment and default. The property management firm has exercised its right of immediate repossession."

Richard’s hands trembled violently as he opened the packet.

Inside was a formal Notice of Eviction signed by a New York State Civil Court judge, alongside a demand for $168,000 in back-rent penalties—a sum Jason had quietly covered every quarter for four years, but had now abruptly stopped funding.

"No... no, no, no!" Richard screamed, pounding his fist against the glass door. "My files are in there! My client records! My computer systems!"

"All personal property inside the premises has been impounded under a commercial lien, sir," the guard stated coldly. "You have fourteen days to file an appeal with the landlord's legal counsel, David Vance, LLP."

At the exact same moment, across town in the high-end shopping district of Soho, Ashley Vance was standing at the checkout counter of a luxury boutique, holding a four-thousand-dollar Chanel handbag.

She handed her black metal American Express card to the clerk with her usual smug, bored expression.

The clerk swiped the card.

A sharp, high-pitched beep echoed from the terminal.

DECLINED - REASON CODE 04: ACCOUNT CLOSED BY PRIMARY.

Ashley’s eyes snapped up. "Excuse me? Swipe it again. That is an unlimited Centurion card."

The clerk swiped it a second time.

DECLINED - CONTACT ISSUING BANK.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," the clerk said politely, holding out the card. "The transaction was declined. Do you have another form of payment?"

Ashley’s face burned bright red as several wealthy shoppers turned to look at her. "That is absurd! My brother owns that account! There must be fifty thousand dollars of available credit on that card!"

She pulled out her secondary Visa card—the one her father had given her.

Swiped.

DECLINED - REASON CODE 04.

She pulled out her personal debit card.

Swiped.

DECLINED - INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.

"Ma'am," the clerk said, her tone dropping into a icy, professional distance. "I will need you to step aside so I can assist the next customer."

Ashley snatched her cards back, leaving the Chanel bag on the counter, sprinting out of the store into the street, bursting into hysterical tears as she pulled out her phone and frantically dialed my office.

This time, someone answered.

It wasn't me.

"Vance Logistics Executive Suite, this is Amanda speaking. How may I direct your call?"

"Amanda!" Ashley screamed into the phone, her voice pitching high with panic. "Put my brother on the phone right now! My cards are declined! Dad’s office is locked! He’s ruined everything! Put Jason on!"

"I'm sorry, Miss Vance," Amanda replied smoothly, her voice utterly unbothered. "Mr. Vance is currently in an executive board meeting. Furthermore, I have been instructed by legal counsel to inform you that all personal lines of credit associated with Vance Logistics corporate accounts have been permanently terminated."

"Tell him to call me back right now or I'm coming to his penthouse!" Ashley shrieked.

"Miss Vance," Amanda warned quietly, "the building security detail at Mr. Vance's residential penthouse and corporate headquarters have been provided with your photograph. If you attempt to enter either property, you will be formally trespassed and detained by NYPD."

The line clicked off.

Ashley stood on the sidewalk of Soho, holding her ringing phone against her ear, realization crashing over her like a freezing wave.

The golden pipeline wasn't just cut.

It had been obliterated.
