Chapter 9 - The Circle Completes

Fiona’s fifth birthday arrived on a crisp, golden September afternoon.

Instead of a cramped, tense private dining room in a formal restaurant, our backyard was filled with laughter, sunlight, and life. Colorful banners fluttered in the gentle breeze, music drifted through the air, and children were running across the grass, playing tag around Caleb’s custom-built playhouse.

Rachel was at the grill, flipping burgers and laughing with Kelly—Luca’s cousin—who had remained a close, loyal friend ever since the night she sent me that life-changing video. My parents were sitting on the patio, chatting with Caleb’s family, who had welcomed Fiona and me with open arms from the very beginning.

Luca had dropped Fiona off earlier that morning after his weekend visit. He had sent a lovely present—a set of beginner art supplies—and a polite card wishing her a happy birthday. Our co-parenting relationship had settled into a respectful, smooth routine. He had learned to respect my role as her mother, and I respected his efforts to be a better father.

Wendy was nowhere to be seen. Her absence was not a tragedy, but a healthy boundary that allowed peace to reign.

As the sun began to dip below the tree line, casting a warm golden glow across the yard, Caleb walked over to the picnic table carrying a beautiful homemade birthday cake topped with pink paper flowers and five bright candles.

"Alright, everyone!" Caleb called out, his voice echoing across the garden. "Cake time!"

The crowd gathered around the big wooden table. Fiona sat on a wooden bench, wearing a simple floral sundress, her eyes wide with excitement as she looked at the glowing candles.

I stood right beside her, holding her hand. Caleb stood on her other side, his arm resting gently around my waist.

Everyone began to sing:

"Happy Birthday to you..."

I looked around the circle of faces surrounding us. Friends who had stood by me during my darkest hours, family who loved us unconditionally, and a partner who cherished us both.

"Happy Birthday, dear Fiona..."

Fiona looked up at me, her face lit by the flickering candlelight. She gave my hand a gentle squeeze.

"Mommy," she whispered, her voice clear and sweet over the singing.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"I love my party," she said, her eyes shining with pure, unadulterated happiness. "I love my family."

"Happy Birthday to you!"

May you like

"Make a wish, baby," I said, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

Fiona took a deep breath, puffed out her cheeks, and blew out all five candles in one mighty breath. The yard erupted into cheers and applause.
