Chapter 2 - THE COUNTRY CLUB ARREST

The Grand Dining Room of the Metropolitan Country Club was bathed in late-afternoon sunlight reflecting off polished crystal chandeliers and silver tea sets.

Vivian Cross sat at the head of a long linen-draped table surrounded by eight prominent women of Boston high society. She was wearing a dusty-rose Chanel suit, her pearl necklace gleaming against her powdered skin, holding a champagne flute as she recounted her son's weekend wedding.

"Of course," Vivian laughed melodiously, taking a delicate sip of crystal champagne, "Daniel insisted on a modest ceremony. The girl is sweet, but from such... simple origins. A schoolteacher's daughter from some forgotten town in the mountains. I’ve already begun teaching her proper etiquette, though I fear it will take months to scrub the dirt from her habits."

The women around the table chuckled politely, fanning themselves with silk napkins.

"Is it true she works as an archivist, Vivian?" one woman asked. "How very... quiet."

"A glorified file clerk, my dear," Vivian sneered softly, setting her flute down. "She brought her clothes in cardboard boxes! Can you imagine? In my foyer! I had to personally sanitize the entire entrance the moment she stepped through the door this morning. She made such a dramatic fuss—screaming as if I had splashed her with lye."

Before the women could reply, the heavy double oak doors of the Grand Dining Room crashed open.

The laughter in the dining room instantly died.

Four uniformed officers from the Massachusetts State Police, flanked by two plainclothes Federal Investigators in dark suits, marched into the dining room. Their heavy boots thundered against the Persian rugs, drawing the shocked gasps of fifty wealthy patrons.

Leading the officers was Special Agent Marcus Vance—a tall, broad-shouldered man with a sharp jaw and cold steel eyes.

Vivian Cross sat up straight, her face flushing with immediate rage. She slammed her silk napkin onto the table and stood up, her pearls clinking against her chest.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?!" Vivian shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "This is a private club! Who authorized you to step onto these grounds?!"

Agent Vance didn't stop until he was standing directly beside Vivian’s chair.

He pulled a thick, white folder from his coat and unfolded a legal document stamped with the blue seal of the Federal District Court.

"Vivian Cross," Agent Vance’s voice boomed across the silent dining room. "You are under arrest for felony assault with a chemical agent, intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm, and witness tampering."

The dining room went completely breathless. Several women at Vivian's table gasped, covering their mouths with their hands.

Vivian let out a shrill, hysterical laugh. "Assault?! Have you lost your mind?! I am Vivian Cross! My husband owns the Cross Grand Hotel chain!"

"Your husband's hotel chain is currently under federal administrative freeze, Mrs. Cross," Agent Vance replied without a trace of emotion. He gestured to the two state troopers behind him. "Handcuff her."

"Don't you dare touch me!" Vivian screamed as a female trooper grabbed her wrist, pulling her arms behind her back. "Daniel! Call Daniel! This is a mistake! I was merely cleaning my house! The penniless girl lied to you!"

Agent Vance pulled out a tablet screen and turned it toward the table of horrified society women.

On the screen, in crisp 4K resolution, played the high-definition security footage from the brass fixture outside the Cross estate foyer.

The video was terrifyingly clear.

It showed Vivian standing in the foyer, holding a industrial-grade bottle of concentrated chemical disinfectant. It showed me standing helplessly near my suitcase. It showed Vivian sneering into my face, raising the nozzle, and spraying the concentrated chemical directly into my open eyes at point-blank range.

And then, it showed Daniel stepping forward, grabbing my shoulders, and holding me pinned in place while I screamed and clawed at my face.

The room gasped in horror. Three women at Vivian’s table backed away from her as if she were a wild animal.

"The video footage has been forensically authenticated," Agent Vance stated coldly as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly over Vivian’s wrists. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"Daniel!" Vivian shrieked as she was dragged away from the linen table, her rose Chanel suit disheveled, her pearls twisting around her neck. "Call Julian! Call the lawyers! This is a conspiracy!"

As Vivian was paraded through the center of the country club in chains, past dozens of high-society figures pulling out their phones to record her disgrace, Daniel came running through the front entrance, breathless and frantic.

"Mom!" Daniel yelled, shoving past a trooper. "What is going on?! Agent, unhand my mother immediately! Do you know who we are?!"

Agent Vance turned to Daniel, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"Daniel Cross?" Vance asked.

"Yes! I am Daniel Cross!" he shouted arrogantly.

"You are under arrest for accessory to felony assault, obstruction of justice, and filing a false police report regarding a chemical injury," Vance said smoothly.

Before Daniel could comprehend the words, two male troopers slammed him against the marble pillar near the valet desk, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Wait! No!" Daniel panicked, his face slamming against the cold marble pillar. "I didn't do anything! It was an accident! Clara is my wife! She won't press charges!"

"Mrs. Clara Hart-Cross isn't pressing charges, Mr. Cross," Agent Vance whispered into Daniel’s ear as he pulled him up by his collar. "The United States District Attorney’s Office is."

Daniel froze, his eyes widening in pure terror. "Hart...? What did you say?"

May you like

"I said Hart," Agent Vance replied, leading him out into the bright sunlight where four police cruisers waited with blue lights flashing. "Your father’s primary creditor is Hartwell Capital. And the woman whose eyes your mother burned this morning is the sole heir to Robert Hart’s entire empire."

Daniel’s knees buckled. He fell to his joints on the gravel driveway, staring at the police cars in total, absolute ruin as the country club doors closed behind him.
