Chapter 9 - WHAT WAS BURIED UNDER AURA

The tunnel entrance was hidden beneath the wine cellar.
We found it just after midnight.
A loose stone.
A metal ring.
A staircase descending into darkness.
Daniel carried a flashlight.
I followed.
Behind me came Chloe, Amelia, Theresa, Richard, and two federal agents.
Nobody spoke.
The tunnel smelled like dust and old concrete.
We walked for nearly ten minutes.
Then we reached a steel door.
Richard stopped.
“This is it.”
“What?”
“The vault.”
The door had no handle.
Only a keypad.
Daniel examined it.
“Any idea?”
Richard looked at me.
“Yes.”
He entered my birthday.
The door unlocked.
I stared at him.
“You knew?”
“I chose it.”
Inside were boxes.
Dozens.
Old documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Bank records.
And one wooden chest.
Theresa began crying.
“That belonged to Jonathan.”
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My name was written on it.
ELENA.
I unfolded the paper.
My father's handwriting.
If you are reading this, then the truth survived me.
I could barely breathe.
The letter explained everything.
Crown Harbor had been created to protect assets belonging to several families.
But corruption had taken over.
Jonathan wanted out.
Richard wanted to expose it.
Theresa wanted to protect their children.
Amelia had been hidden.
I had been given to another family.
Mark had been raised believing Jonathan was his biological father.
Nobody knew the full truth.
Except Jonathan.
And he had left one final instruction.
Aura must remain in Elena's name.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?”
He pointed to the final paragraph.
Because Aura wasn't merely a restaurant.
It was the legal anchor protecting the remaining Crown Harbor assets.
Whoever owned Aura controlled the trust.
I stared.
“So Mark couldn't own it.”
“No.”
“Chloe couldn't.”
“No.”
“Theresa couldn't.”
“No.”
“Only me.”
Daniel nodded.
Richard sat down.
“That was why they came after you.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
He opened another box.
Inside were photographs of businessmen, executives, lawyers, politicians, bankers.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
The ledger.
All connected.
“This is enough to destroy them,” Daniel whispered.
One federal agent looked at him.
“It could trigger the largest financial investigation this state has seen in decades.”
I looked at Theresa.
“Why did you keep the truth from me?”
She cried.
“Because I thought if you knew, they would come for you.”
“They came anyway.”
“I know.”
Chloe stepped toward her.
“You ruined both our lives.”
Theresa nodded.
“I know.”
Then a phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It was Mark's phone.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A distorted voice said,
“You found the vault.”
I said nothing.
“You think you're safe.”
“Who are you?”
A laugh.
“You have until sunrise.”
“For what?”
“To surrender the ledger.”
“And if I don't?”
“Then everyone you love dies.”
The call ended.
I looked at the people around me.
Then I realized something.
“They don't know.”
Daniel frowned.
“Know what?”
“They don't know we have the evidence.”
Richard understood.
“You want to trap them.”
I nodded.
“We make them think they won.”
“How?”
I looked at the restaurant plans.
“The anniversary party.”
Daniel stared.
“What anniversary party?”
“Aura's tenth anniversary.”
“It was canceled.”
“No.”
I smiled.
“It's happening.”
Chloe looked at me.
“What are you planning?”
I looked at the old security system.
“The same thing my mother-in-law taught me.”
Theresa frowned.
“What?”
May you like
I picked up my phone.
“Let people believe their own lies.”
