Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Maya

While Liam sat in the sterile silence of the corporate boardroom signing away his life’s work, another, quieter collapse was unfolding three miles across town in a sunless downtown studio apartment.

Maya Lin sat on the edge of her unmade bed, staring at her phone screen with a mounting sense of panic.

For the past forty-eight hours, Liam’s texts had stopped entirely. No morning greetings, no late-night promises of how he was going to "leave Nora soon," and no frantic check-ins. When she tried calling his cell phone directly at noon, it went straight to voicemail—not his personal greeting, but the automated carrier message indicating the line had been suspended.

A sharp knock rattled her apartment door.

Maya jumped, her heart fluttering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Liam?" she whispered hopefully, rushing across the linoleum floor and throwing the door open.

It wasn't Liam.

Standing in the doorway was a tall, severe-looking woman with silver-streaked hair and sharp, unforgiving eyes. Gertrude Sterling stepped past Maya without waiting for an invitation, her heels clicking sharply against the cheap floorboards as she surveyed the cramped, sterile apartment paid for entirely with stolen marital funds.

Maya staggered backward, clutching the collar of her oversized cardigan. "Aunt... Aunt Gertrude? What... what are you doing here?"

Gertrude turned slowly, her gaze sweeping over the framed architectural sketches on the walls—sketches Liam had drawn for Maya, signed with affectionate little notes in the margins. Gertrude’s lips curled into a cold, sardonic smile.

"Aunt Gertrude," the older woman repeated, her voice dripping with venom. "Such a sweet, affectionate little title. You called me that while you sat at my holiday table, ate my food, and accepted gifts bought with my daughter-in-law's hard-earned savings."

Maya’s face drained of all color, her lower lip trembling violently. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. Liam and I—"

"Liam is currently downtown signing over his house, his firm shares, and his bank accounts to Nora," Gertrude interrupted, stepping closer until Maya was forced to back up against the dresser. "The game is over, little girl. The apartment lease? Paid for by Liam using corporate embezzlement funds. The car parked downstairs? Registered under his business account. And as of this morning, all of those accounts have been frozen by a federal audit."

Maya let out a choked gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. "No... that's not true. Liam said... he said he was going to divorce her! He said their marriage was already dead!"

"A classic line," Gertrude said, her voice laced with bitter ice. "Spoken by every coward who wants to have a comfortable home to sleep in while playing house with a gullible college graduate on the side. Did you really think a man who spent ten years building a life with a loyal, hardworking woman would throw it all away for a twenty-three-year-old intern who couldn't even pay her own rent?"

Maya collapsed onto the edge of the bed, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as the entire foundation of her secret fantasy crumbled into dust. She wasn't a sophisticated femme fatale playing a high-stakes game; she was simply a disposable pawn in a crumbling man's midlife crisis.

"He... he promised me," Maya sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "He said we were going to move away, start a new firm together..."

"He lied to you, just like he lied to Nora, just like he lied to me," Gertrude said, turning toward the door with a final, crushing look of disdain. "And by the end of the week, the university alumni office and your architectural firm's HR department will receive complete copies of the financial audit documenting how you accepted stolen funds to maintain this lifestyle. Good luck finding a job in this city, Maya. You’re going to need it."

Gertrude walked out of the apartment, pulling the door shut with a heavy, final click, leaving Maya alone in the silence of her collapsing world.
