Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s Real JobI did not call Adrian back.

Luca would have killed me.
Instead, I sent the voicemail to him.
His response arrived twenty seconds later.
DO NOT CONTACT HIM.
Then:
I mean it, Elena.
Then:
Please tell Nico I also mean him.
Nico looked offended when I showed him.
“He assumes the worst about me.”
“He knows you.”
“Exactly.”
That afternoon, we learned Adrian had been released while investigators continued reviewing evidence.
A temporary protective order kept him away from me.
I expected rage.
Instead I felt relief.
Distance gave me room to think.
The next move came from Vanessa.
At 7:04 p.m., she appeared outside Dominic’s home.
Alone.
No lawyer.
No suitcase.
Just a cream coat and a face stripped of its usual confidence.
Security would not let her past the gate.
She called me.
“I need five minutes.”
“No.”
“Then Richard wins.”
I almost hung up.
She added, “Ask Gabriel who owns Hart Strategic.”
I looked across the library.
Gabriel was working behind a laptop.
“Who owns Hart Strategic?”
He frowned.
“Elliot Hart.”
“Vanessa says ask again.”
His fingers moved.
Corporate registrations.
Subsidiaries.
Trusts.
Then he stopped.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“Elliot is the registered manager. The controlling interest is held by another LLC.”
“Owned by?”
Gabriel traced it.
“Cole Meridian Partners.”
My throat tightened.
“Richard?”
“Looks like it.”
I returned to the call.
“Five minutes.”
Vanessa entered the library under the watch of three brothers who disliked her and one who openly despised her.
Dominic remained standing.
Nico leaned against the fireplace.
Gabriel kept his laptop open.
I sat opposite Vanessa.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked ordinary.
No perfect makeup.
No couture.
No smug smile.
“You knew about the room in my townhouse.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Richard.”
“Why were you there?”
“To remove records.”
“So you admit stealing from me.”
Her jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
I had not expected that.
“Why?”
“Because Richard ordered me to.”
Dominic laughed quietly.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I’m not asking you to like me.”
“That’s convenient.”
She turned back to me.
“Three years ago, my brother Elliot’s development company was failing. Richard offered to save it. He invested through a company we later discovered he controlled.”
“And?”
“And he made Elliot dependent on Cole Development.”
“What does that have to do with you sleeping with my husband?”
Pain crossed her face.
Maybe shame.
Maybe performance.
I no longer trusted myself to distinguish them.
“Richard knew Adrian was becoming suspicious about Meridian.”
“Suspicious of his own father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian found duplicate invoices.”
That surprised me.
I had spent years seeing Adrian as Richard’s arrogant son.
I had not considered that he might also have been trapped by him.
Vanessa continued.
“Richard asked me to get close to Adrian. He said if I kept him distracted, he could clean up the records.”
“You seduced my husband for Richard?”
“I was supposed to become someone Adrian trusted.”
“You became more than that.”
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
The admission hurt more because she did not deny it.
“Did Adrian know you were working for Richard?”
“Not at first.”
“And later?”
“Yes.”
I sat back.
“He found out?”
“Four months ago.”
“Then why continue the affair?”
Vanessa’s eyes met mine.
“Because by then it wasn’t only an assignment.”
The room went cold.
I almost laughed.
“That’s your defense?”
“No. There is no defense.”
At least she understood that much.
She reached into her purse slowly.
Dominic moved.
“It’s a flash drive,” she said.
She placed it on the table.
“The originals I removed from the townhouse are gone.”
My stomach dropped.
“Gone where?”
“Richard has them.”
“You took them to him?”
“Yes.”
I stood.
“You came here to tell me you stole evidence from my house and gave it to the man covering up the fraud?”
“I made a copy first.”
Gabriel’s head lifted.
Vanessa pushed the drive toward me.
“Everything is there.”
Nobody spoke.
Finally Gabriel asked, “Why?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because Richard is going to destroy Adrian to save himself.”
I should have enjoyed hearing it.
I did not.
“What does that mean?”
“He intends to make Adrian responsible for Meridian. Every authorization. Every kickback. Every shell company.”
“Did Adrian participate?”
“Yes.”
The word landed heavily.
Vanessa did not soften it.
“He signed things he should not have signed. He knew some invoices were inflated. But the network existed before he became president.”
“So he’s guilty.”
“Of some things.”
“And Richard?”
“Of everything.”
I looked at the drive.
“And you?”
Her voice dropped.
“I moved money.”
Gabriel stared at her.
“You understand what you’re admitting?”
“Yes.”
“Why come here?”
“Because I finally understood last night what Richard is capable of.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You needed to watch me get humiliated to discover that?”
Vanessa flinched.
“You’re right.”
“No, answer me.”
She swallowed.
“I should have stopped it.”
“You could have.”
“Yes.”
“You smiled.”
Tears appeared in her eyes.
I felt nothing for them.
“I was afraid of what Adrian would do if I challenged him in front of everyone.”
“Imagine how I felt.”
“I know.”
“No. You don’t.”
She nodded.
“You’re right.”
Again.
No excuses.
That somehow made it harder.
I picked up the flash drive.
“If this contains what you say, my lawyer gets it.”
“Good.”
“And if you’re lying—”
“I’m not.”
Nico finally spoke.
“Where’s Elliot?”
Vanessa’s expression collapsed.
“I don’t know.”
That was the first moment she truly looked terrified.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“He disappeared two days ago.”
“Police?”
“He told me not to call them.”
“Why?”
“Because he found something inside Meridian that even Richard didn’t know existed.”
Gabriel leaned forward.
“What?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“He never told me. He just said if anything happened to him, I needed to find Elena.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He said Salvatore Moretti had built a dead-man switch.”
Every Moretti brother looked at me.
I remembered Dad’s letters.
“What kind of switch?”
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa stood.
“But Elliot said one thing.”
She looked directly at me.
“If Richard Cole ever lost control of the company, the entire Meridian archive would automatically go somewhere he could never retrieve it.”
“Where?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s what Elliot was trying to find out.”
She walked toward the door.
I stopped her.
“Vanessa.”
She turned.
“Why did you let Adrian hurt me?”
The room seemed to disappear.
For once, there was no corporate fraud between us.
No brothers.
No money.
Just two women and one unforgivable night.
Her voice broke.
“Because I was cruel enough to think your humiliation would make me feel chosen.”
I said nothing.
“It didn’t.”
She wiped her cheek.
“It made me realize what being chosen by Adrian actually meant.”
Then she left.
Gabriel immediately inserted the flash drive into an isolated computer.
Files filled the screen.
Invoices.
Ledgers.
Emails.
Audio recordings.
Then one video.
The date was eight months earlier.
The same week Adrian’s affair with Vanessa began.
Gabriel clicked it.
Richard appeared on-screen in his office.
Vanessa sat across from him.
We heard Richard clearly.
“Keep Adrian busy. Keep him emotional. If he begins asking about Meridian again, remind him what he stands to lose.”
Vanessa asked, “And Elena?”
Richard smiled.
“My daughter-in-law believes marriage is about love.”
He leaned back.
“Let her.”
I stared at the screen.
Then Richard added one final sentence.
“When the time comes, she’ll sign whatever Adrian puts in front of her.”
I looked at Gabriel.
“What was he planning to make me sign?”
Gabriel searched the copied records.
Three minutes later, he found a draft document.
TRANSFER OF VOTING INTEREST.
My forty-one percent stake.
May you like
Adrian had planned to take it from me.
And according to the metadata, the document had been prepared for my birthday.
