Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

WHOOSH!

A violent wall of yellow flame erupted across the wooden front steps!

The heat hit my face like a physical punch. Lorraine shrieked in terror as the fire instantly caught the dry cedar siding of the cottage, trapping her and Daniel on the burning porch!

"Daniel! The fire! It's too big!" Lorraine screamed, dropping her bag of stolen silver, clawing at Daniel’s coat as dark smoke filled the porch overhang.

"MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!"

Shouts echoed from the woods as Officer Vance and his tactical team burst into the clearing, their high-powered rifles raised, flashlights cutting through the thick smoke!

"POLICE! DROP TO THE GROUND!" tactical officers roared as county sheriff cruisers tore down the driveway, their red-and-blue strobe lights illuminating the burning house!

Daniel panicked. He grabbed his mother by the arm, trying to jump off the side railing into the bushes, but Officer Vance sprinted up the embankment, tackling Daniel directly into the wet mud!

"GET OFF ME!" Daniel shrieked, thrashing wildly, his face covered in black sludge as Officer Vance slammed his arms behind his back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists!

Two county firefighters rushed forward with chemical extinguishers, dousing the porch flames before they could reach the interior framing of the historic house.

Lorraine was dragged off the porch by two deputy sheriffs, coughing violently from the smoke, her silk robe ruined, her fake hair matted with rain and ash. She collapsed onto her knees in the driveway, crying hysterically as a female officer placed her under arrest for felony burglary, extortion, and arson conspiracy.

I stood in the rain, watching the steel handcuffs bite into Daniel’s wrists.

Officer Vance dragged Daniel to his feet.

Daniel’s leather jacket was torn, his face smeared with soot and mud. As the deputies pulled him toward the back of the police cruiser, his eyes met mine.

The terrifying abuser who had controlled six years of my life was gone.

In his place stood a pathetic, whimpering coward whose life was completely, utterly over.

"Clara..." Daniel sobbed, his voice weak and raspy. "Please... talk to them... tell them it was an accident... I love you, Clara... please..."

I walked up to the edge of the police cruiser door. I looked down at him with no hatred, no anger, and no lingering fear.

Only pure, absolute indifference.

"I never loved you, Daniel," I said softly, my voice carrying over the sound of the rain. "I loved the man you pretended to be. And that man never existed."

The deputy slammed the cruiser door shut, cutting off Daniel’s sobbing cries.

Arthur Pendelton walked up beside me, placing a warm dry blanket over my shoulders.

"The District Attorney just called," Arthur said quietly. "With the arson attempt caught on bodycam, the felony fraud evidence, and the domestic violence charges, Daniel Vance is looking at a minimum sentence of thirty-five years without parole. His mother will be serving at least twelve."

I looked up at the historic cottage.

The firefighters had completely extinguished the porch fire. The historic wood was scorched, but the house—my aunt's house, my family legacy—was standing tall and strong against the night sky.

A slow, deep breath filled my lungs—the cleanest, purest breath I had taken in six years.
