Chapter 4 - The Public Mask Slips

The boardroom at Holt Table was a monument to Darius’s arrogance: floor-to-ceiling chrome, Italian leather chairs, and a massive portrait of Darius on the wall behind the executive desk.

When Noel walked in at 11:05 AM, the room fell dead silent.

Darius was sitting at the head of the long glass table, wearing a brand-new tailored suit. He had makeup slathered over his neck and chin to cover the severe red scalding burns from the tomato bisque. Leila Morgan sat to his left, clutching a leather binder, her face pale. Six major board members and lead investors sat around the perimeter, looking distinctly uncomfortable.

Darius’s eyes flared with anger when he saw Noel, but he quickly forced a look of grieving pity onto his face.

“Noel,” Darius said softly, putting on his best public performance for the investors. “You shouldn't be here. We all know you’re going through a very difficult psychological moment. After your outburst last night—”

“Save the performance, Darius,” Noel interrupted, her voice ringing out like a steel blade hitting marble.

She walked to the head of the table, unlocked her briefcase, and tossed six thick leather-bound dossiers onto the center of the glass table. They slid across the polished surface, stopping right in front of the board members.

“What is this?” Marcus Vance, the lead representative from Apex Capital, asked, picking up a folder.

“That is the truth,” Noel said, removing her sunglasses.

Gasps echoed through the room as the board members saw the swollen purple bruise on her cheekbone and her stitches.

“Last night at Atlas House, Darius Holt struck me in front of forty people because I refused to smile for his investors,” Noel stated plainly, her voice completely steady. “He called it a joke. But what isn't a joke is that Darius has embezzled three point two million dollars of Holt Table’s operational capital over the last eighteen months.”

Darius jumped to his feet, his chair screeching against the floor. “She’s lying! She’s unhinged! Security, escort her out of the building immediately!”

“Sit down, Darius!” Marcus Vance roared, his voice thunderous. Marcus was staring at the forensic accounting documents Noel had provided. He turned his glacial gaze onto Leila Morgan. “Leila, care to explain why your private shell company received an eighty-thousand-dollar transfer from our Series B fund three days ago?”

Leila turned white as a sheet. She looked frantically at Darius, expecting him to defend her. But Darius’s eyes were wild, darting around the room like a trapped animal.

“It’s... it was for marketing acquisition!” Leila stammered, her hands shaking violently.

“Marketing acquisition?” Noel stepped forward, leaning her hands on the glass table, inches from Darius’s pale face. “Then why does the algorithm patents that power this entire platform belong exclusively to Noel Benton? I signed a licensing agreement with Holt Table six years ago, Darius. And under section 14-B of that contract, if the CEO engages in moral turpitude or criminal fraud, the software license is instantly revoked.”

Darius stared at her, his lips trembling. “You... you wouldn't shut down the system.”

“Try me,” Noel whispered. “I turn off the servers at midnight.”
