Chapter 9 - The Verdict
Two months later, the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois delivered its final judgment in United States v. Vance & Callaway.
Victor Vance pleaded guilty to six counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and municipal bribery, accepting a twelve-year federal prison sentence at a medium-security facility in Terre Haute.
Ryan Callaway didn't even make it to trial. Without the backing of Vance Capital or the protection of his senior partners, he accepted a plea deal on lesser charges of falsifying compliance documents, resulting in three years of probation, community service, and permanent disbarment from the Illinois State Bar.
On a crisp November afternoon, the news flashed across the financial tickers on the sides of the downtown skyscrapers.
Inside the Blackstone Meridian boardroom, the television was muted.
Emma sat behind her desk, reviewing the final title deeds for the old rail yards behind Chinatown—the very property Victor Vance had tried to acquire through bribery and shell companies.
The door opened, and Jin-woo walked in, holding a tray with three crystal champagne flutes and a vintage bottle of Dom Pérignon.
"Well, cousins," Jin-woo announced with a brilliant grin, popping the cork with a satisfying pop that sent foam spilling over the rim. "The federal docket is clear. Vance is heading to federal prison, Ryan is raking leaves in a public park in Evanston, and our logistics subsidiary just secured the exclusive freight rights to the entire Chinatown corridor."
Adrian walked in behind him, taking two of the glasses and handing one to Emma.
"To logistics," Jin-woo raised his glass.
"To infrastructure," Adrian added, clinking his glass against his cousin's.
Emma stood up, lifting her flute, her eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable triumph.

They drank together, watching the golden lights of the Chicago skyline ignite one by one as dusk settled over the city.
