Chapter 8 - The Price of Arrogance

By noon, Trent stood on the sun-baked asphalt of the corporate parking lot, holding a single cardboard box containing his desk items.

The security guards had confiscated his company laptop, his parking pass, and his executive smartphone before escorting him to the lobby doors.

His personal phone buzzed continuously in his pocket as he walked toward his leased sedan under the glaring Gulf Coast sun.

He pulled the phone out, seeing five missed calls from Corinne and an urgent notification from his bank.

The bank notification was a formal notice: his corporate severance had been withheld pending civil litigation for fund misappropriation.

Trent pressed the phone to his ear, answering Corinne’s sixth incoming call with a ragged, trembling breath.

"Trent! Where are you?" Corinne cried hysterically through the speaker.

"The leasing agent for Gulf Hills just called! Our pre-approval was canceled because your employment verification failed!"

"What is going on? Did you get the promotion or not?"

"I was fired, Corinne," Trent rasped, leaning his forehead against the hot window of his car.

"What?" Corinne shrieked, her voice turning sharp enough to cut glass.

"Fired? How could they fire you? You were the top candidate!"

"Marcus Vance ordered an audit," Trent confessed, tears of shame and panic burning in his eyes.

"They found the travel vouchers from our trips to Destin. They’re demanding forty-two thousand dollars in restitution or they’ll press federal charges."

The silence on the other end of the line was dead, cold, and absolute.

"Corinne? Are you there?" Trent begged, his voice cracking. "We can figure this out. We can downsize, get a smaller apartment—"

"I didn't sign up to live in a studio apartment, Trent," Corinne interrupted, her tone completely stripped of all affection.

"You told me you were going to run this division! You told me we were going to be high society!"

"I'm packing my things from your place right now. Don't bother calling me back."

The call disconnected with a sharp, hollow click, leaving Trent standing alone on the scorching pavement.

Five years earlier, Corinne had smiled in our shared kitchen while I packed my bags in tears.

Now, the moment the money and status evaporated, she was walking out on him without a second thought.

Trent dropped to his knees beside his car, weeping into his hands as the realization of his complete ruin crashed down upon him.

He had thrown away a woman who would have stood by him through poverty, illness, and ruin, all for a hollow mirage that dissolved at the first sign of rain.
