Chapter 2 - An Unannounced Guest

A heavy silence rippled through the lower level, sudden enough that Jason frowned and glanced toward the bathroom door.

It wasn't a standard, polite ring. It was followed immediately by the firm, measured knock of someone who had no intention of waiting on a doorstep.

"Who the hell is that at ten o'clock?" Jason muttered, running a hand through his hair. "If it's the neighbors complaining about parking, Mom's going to lose her mind."

He hurried out of the bathroom, not bothering to check if I was following.

I took off the ruined silk dress and dropped it unceremoniously into the trash bin beneath the vanity. In the guest closet, I didn't touch Patricia's pastel cardigans. Instead, I put on the spare dark tailored trousers and simple white button-down shirt I always kept in my overnight bag. I tied my damp hair into a sleek, low knot, wiped the last traces of wine from my jawline, and stepped out into the hallway.

From the top of the sweeping mahogany staircase, the entire foyer was visible.

Patricia was already standing near the entrance, a flute of champagne held delicately between her French-manicured fingers. Tyler stood beside her, leaning against the archway with an amused, drunken swagger.

"Who on earth could that be, darling?" Patricia purred, nodding to the hired houseman. "Open it, Marcus. If it's another floral arrangement from the club, have them leave it on the porch."

Marcus swung the heavy oak door open.

The cool night air swept into the foyer, bringing with it the unmistakable hum of an idling twelve-cylinder engine. Parked directly across the circular driveway, blocking three Mercedes sedans, sat an obsidian-black Mercedes-Maybach bearing commercial executive plates.

On the porch stood two men.

The younger man held a thick black leather portfolio under his arm. The older man, dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit with a silver watch chain gleaming against his vest, stepped across the threshold without waiting for an invitation. His hair was cropped gray, his posture military-straight, and his expression carried the unmistakable weight of absolute authority.

Daniel Vance.

The Chief Executive Officer of Bennett Holdings.

A collective murmur stirred among the guests who spilled out of the drawing room. Several older gentlemen—executives and retired partners from Boston’s financial district—froze mid-drink.

"Good heavens," someone whispered behind Patricia. "Is that Vance?"

Tyler’s eyes went wide. The drunken glaze in his expression vanished instantly, replaced by a frantic, breathless shock. He dropped his glass onto a side table so hard it sloshed over the wood, nearly stumbling as he straightened his tie.

"Mr. Vance?" Tyler stammered, his voice jumping an octave. He practically pushed past his mother to reach the entryway, his hands outstretched, his chest puffing out with sudden, hysterical pride. "Mr. Vance! Sir! I... I had no idea you were coming! Did corporate forward the party address? This is... I'm honored, sir. Truly honored!"

Patricia looked as though she had just been crowned queen of Lexington. She smoothed her satin cocktail dress, stepping forward with her most dazzling, aristocratic smile.

"Daniel Vance," Patricia exclaimed, her voice ringing across the foyer for all eighty guests to hear. "What an extraordinary surprise! I told Tyler the board recognized his potential, but to have the CEO himself travel all the way from the Beacon Hill office on a Saturday evening... Please, come in! Marcus, get Mr. Vance a glass of the vintage Dom Pérignon immediately!"

Daniel didn't take Tyler's outstretched hand. He didn't even look at it.

His pale, hawkish eyes swept right past Tyler's flushed face, ignored Patricia entirely, and scanned the foyer with clinical detachment.

"I am not here for champagne, Mrs. Walker," Daniel said, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely devoid of warmth. "Nor am I here to celebrate."

Tyler’s hand remained suspended awkwardly in mid-air. "Sir? I don't... I don't understand. The regional director post—"

"Mr. Walker," Daniel interrupted, turning his gaze on him for a single, freezing second. "Your appointment was scheduled to take effect at eight o'clock on Monday morning. As of twenty minutes ago, that appointment has been nullified, and your corporate credentials have been revoked."

A collective gasp swept through the room.

Patricia’s smile shattered. "Nullified? What kind of joke is this? My son was personally recommended by the senior vice president!"

"It is not a joke, madam," Daniel replied coldly. He turned toward the stairs, looking up.

His eyes found me standing at the landing.

Without another word to Tyler or Patricia, the most powerful executive in Massachusetts' private corporate sector took off his leather gloves, handed them to his assistant, and bowed his head with profound, unmistakable deference.

"Madam Chairwoman," Daniel Vance said clearly, his voice carrying into every quiet corner of the house. "I received your instructions. Should I cancel his promotion permanently, or would you prefer to handle his termination yourself?"
