Chapter 5 - CANCELING THE SHOW

Vanessa’s father burst into the room, his face red, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

“What the hell is going on in here?” Richard Hart yelled, looking between me and his daughter. “Andrew, your sister is standing by your truck with the girl, refusing to speak to anyone! The guests are confused!”

“The wedding is canceled, Richard,” I said, turning toward the door.

“What?” Richard roared, stepping into my path. “Are you out of your mind? Do you have any idea how much money I spent on this event? You can't just cancel a wedding three minutes before the march because of some minor domestic disagreement!”

I grabbed Richard Hart by the lapels of his designer tuxedo, shoving him back two steps until he backed into the vanity table, rattling the perfume bottles.

“If you or your daughter come anywhere near my child again,” I warned, my voice dropping into a dark promise, “I will make sure your firm’s federal contracts under Fort Carson review are scrutinized line by line by military auditors. Get out of my way.”

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical scream behind me. “Andrew! You can't leave me here! What am I supposed to tell my friends? What am I supposed to tell everyone?”

I stopped at the doorway, looking back over my shoulder at the woman in the pristine white gown.

“Tell them there will be no ceremony,” I said softly. “Because a real father doesn't trade his child for a lie.”
