Chapter 11 - The Phantom at Pier 4

The transformation of Calumet Harbor from a notorious contraband corridor into a certified union logistics hub had cost our partnership fourteen million dollars and eighteen months of relentless bureaucratic warfare. Where shipping crates filled with unmarked munitions and offshore narcotics once cleared through forged manifests, clean grain barges, automotive parts, and pharmaceutical cold-storage containers now glided along the slips under the watchful scrutiny of the United States Coast Guard. At the head of Pier 4, where my father and Thomas Reed had collapsed in pools of their own blood eight years earlier, Clara and I had erected a black granite obelisk inscribed with two simple words: Honor Restored.

Yet on a freezing Tuesday morning in late October, the dark sediment of the past was violently dragged to the surface.

I stood at the water's edge, my trench coat whipped by an icy, horizontal gale blowing off Lake Michigan. Beside me, Marcus stood with his broad frame braced against the wind, his radio spitting frantic tactical traffic from the outer perimeter. The black granite monument had not merely been defaced; it had been butchered with methodical, terrifying calculation.

Draped across the stone was an industrial butcher’s apron soaked in thick, dark animal blood, pinned to the center of Thomas Reed’s engraved name by an eight-inch carbon-steel trench knife. Driven through the hilt of the blade was an antique ivory envelope bearing the crimson wax seal of the Moretti family—a seal that should have been permanently buried when Dominic Moretti was sentenced to life imprisonment at ADX Florence.

Marcus used a pair of sterile forensic tweezers to lift the parchment from the steel blade. "The yard supervisor found it at four-fifteen during the morning berth rotation, Bennett. The security cameras on Tower Three were looped with a twelve-second digital static bypass. Whoever planted this knew the exact blind spot of our automated sweeping radar."

I took the envelope, breaking the wax seal with my thumb. Inside lay a single, glossy photograph and a handwritten letter penned on heavy cardstock.

The photograph showed Clara Reed walking down the limestone steps of our Cicero pediatric clinic yesterday afternoon at 4:30 PM. Her arms were wrapped around a carton of medical supplies, her hair blowing across her smiling face, completely unaware that a long-range telescopic lens had tracked her from an unmarked van across the street.

The letter was written in a sharp, slanted script:

A reformed king is just a target that forgot how to shoot. Dominic may rot in a concrete box, Bennett, but House Moretti did not build an empire across two continents to let a twenty-two-year-old maid and a guilt-ridden prince turn our shipping lines into a nursery. You will surrender the deep-water permits for the southern terminals by midnight on Friday, or we will show the little cleaner what happens to orphans who sit on thrones bought with dead men's blood.

— Julian Moretti.

Julian. Dominic’s younger brother, the shadowy architect who had managed the syndicate’s European distribution networks through Rotterdam and Antwerp. Federal intelligence had claimed he fled to South America during the 2021 crackdowns, but the letter in my hands proved that the viper had returned to Chicago.

"The federal task force missed an offshore transfer two weeks ago," Marcus murmured, his hand resting near his concealed sidearm. "Julian landed in Gary via a private turboprop from the Caribbean. He brought eight contract shooters with him—men from the Balkan trafficking lines who have zero respect for old-school territory codes or civic boundaries."

I stared down at the photograph of Clara. In her eyes was the light of a woman who had pulled my soul out of the abyss, who spent her days ensuring that sick children in Chicago’s poorest districts received treatment without having to beg.

A familiar, deadly chill spread through my veins. For two years, I had believed the monster was dead, buried beneath charitable foundations and board resolutions. But looking at the threat against my wife, the cold, lethal predator that had ruled the Chicago underworld roared awake.

I crumpled the letter in my fist until the parchment snapped.

"Double the tactical detail at Lake Forest," I commanded, my baritone flat, lethal, and absolute. "Equip the security transport with Level IV ballistic glass. And Marcus... contact our old liaisons in the Cook County Special Operations Division. Julian Moretti thinks he is hunting a reformed gentleman. He is about to discover that when you threaten an honest man's home, you awaken an executioner."
