Chapter 18 - The Master Transmission Queue

I released my grip on Marcus's coat, stepping back as he casually straightened his lapels, brushing an invisible speck of dust from his sleeve. My eyes darted to the primary monitor glowing on the folding table. On the screen, a progress bar was slowly creeping forward, accompanied by a text line reading: *Automated Payload Dissemination in Progress... Target: Federal District Court / Investigative Division.* The timer displayed fourteen minutes remaining. Fourteen minutes before the entire encrypted package containing the forged ledgers, the offshore routing slips, and my name attached as the primary beneficiary was transmitted directly to federal authorities.
"You didn't wait for a dead man's switch," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper as the cold reality of the trap set in. "You triggered the transmission the moment we stepped into this unit." Marcus smiled, walking over to the folding table and tapping the edge of the keyboard with his index finger. "Efficiency, David. It's what made our firm successful in the beginning, and it's what's going to ensure my survival now. The moment your security camera picked me up at your garage this afternoon, the countdown began. You walked right into the kill zone." Anna didn't panic. While Marcus was gloating, her eyes were scanning the back of the server rack, tracing the heavy amber fiber-optic cable that ran from the primary processing unit up through a small hole drilled into the corrugated steel roof.
"He's not transmitting through a standard cellular uplink," Anna said quickly, her voice urgent and low. "Look at the frequency on the diagnostic panel. He's using a dedicated satellite relay dish mounted on the roof of the storage building. A local jammer won't work on satellite frequencies." Marcus turned to look at her, his smile faltering slightly for the first time. "You're too smart for your own good, Anna. But you don't have the administrative password to access the relay control panel, and even if you did, you only have twelve minutes left before the upload hits 100%." I looked at Marcus, then looked at the server rack, and finally at Anna. There was no time to negotiate, no time to play legal games, and no time to wait for the police.
I grabbed a heavy steel wrench resting on the lower shelf of the workbench, hefted its weight in my hand, and marched straight toward the server rack. "David, wait!" Marcus shouted, lunging forward to stop me. "If you short out the primary server while the upload is spooling, it corrupts the destination headers, but it also triggers a secondary emergency ping that—" I didn't let him finish. I swung the heavy steel wrench with all my strength, smashing it directly into the glass front panel of the primary processing unit. Glass shattered across the concrete floor, sparks showered outward in a bright, blinding cascade, and the whirring hum of the server abruptly died down into a sickening, metallic screech of dying hard drives.

The monitor on the table flickered violently, flashing a red error code across the screen: *CRITICAL ERROR: UPLOAD INTERRUPTED. DATA PACKET CORRUPTED.* Marcus stared at the ruined equipment, his face turning pale with absolute fury. "You idiot!" he screamed, lunging toward me with his fists raised. "You just destroyed the only proof that could clear your name from the liability trail!" But I didn't care about the liability trail anymore. I sidestepped his clumsy rush, grabbed him by the shoulder, and spun him around, pinning him firmly against the cold metal door frame of the storage unit just as the wirl of sirens began to echo faintly in the distance down Highway 55.
