Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Sophia

By mid-afternoon, Child Protective Services had granted Matthew temporary legal guardianship pending a formal court hearing, thanks to Jackson Pierce’s aggressive legal maneuvering and the undeniable 99.999% DNA match.
The Hartwell estate turned into a sanctuary. Decorators were quietly dispatched to convert a spacious guest suite adjacent to the twins' room into a custom bedroom for Lily, matching her favorite colors and interests, which her sisters spent hours eagerly helping her list.
Yet, despite the newfound safety, an unsettling shadow hung over the house.
While the three girls were downstairs in the art studio painting together, Matthew sat in his late wife’s private archive room on the third floor. Sophia Hartwell had been an investigative journalist before her passing, a brilliant woman who refused to back down from uncovering corporate corruption.
"Matt?" Diana walked into the room, carrying a tray of tea. "The girls are fine. Lily is actually smiling. She has Sophia's laugh, Matt. Exactly like the twins."
Matthew didn't look up from a dusty leather-bound journal he had pulled from a safe behind Sophia's painting. "Di... look at this."
Diana set the tea down and leaned over his shoulder. "What is it?"
"Sophia’s private notes from twelve years ago," Matthew said, pointing to handwritten entries dated two months before the delivery. "Before she went into labor, Sophia was working on a massive expose regarding illegal pharmaceutical trials funded by the Vance-Moreau Medical Group—a Swiss-backed conglomerate where Dr. Arthur Vance was a board member."
Diana gasped softly. "You think Sophia’s investigation was connected to Lily’s abduction?"
"Read the last entry, written three days before the blackout," Matthew said, his voice trembling with anger.
'Arthur Vance warned me today during my check-up. He told me some truths are too dangerous for a mother-to-be. He said if I published the story regarding the trial anomalies, my family would pay a price I couldn't imagine. I thought he was threatening my career. God help me, what does he mean?'
Matthew closed the journal hard, a cloud of dust rising into the air. "It wasn't just a nurse wanting a baby. Vance stole my daughter as leverage or punishment. He used Eleanor Reynolds—a nurse in debt—to execute the snatch during the power blackout, making Sophia believe she only gave birth to twins!"
"My God," Diana whispered, covering her mouth. "Sophia died three days after giving birth thinking she was leaving behind two babies... while a third was taken to silence her work!"
"And Sophia’s death..." Matthew’s eyes burned with a dark, terrible realization. "Her sudden heart failure forty-eight hours after delivery... we were told it was a postpartum complication. But what if Vance made sure she didn't live long enough to ask questions?"
Before Diana could process the horrifying hypothesis, the front door chime echoed through the house.
Jackson Pierce hurried into the archive room, holding a sleek black laptop. "Matt, we have a breach."
"What kind of breach?" Matthew demanded, standing up instantly.
"I had my private investigators run a deep-web scan on Eleanor Reynolds' old bank accounts to trace where her money came from," Jack explained, setting the laptop on the table. "Ten minutes ago, someone tried to remotely wipe Reynolds' sealed medical employment files from the Greenwich Hospital cloud server. The IP address was routed through a secure proxy in Zurich."
"Vance," Matthew spat.
"Whoever it is, they know we have Lily," Jack said grimly. "When Mrs. Wilson filed the temporary custody update in the state system this morning, the name 'Lily Reynolds' flagged an automated alert in the state database. The people who took her twelve years ago now know she’s at the Hartwell estate."
Matthew walked over to the window looking down at his expansive lawn. In the garden below, Lily, Emma, and Olivia were running around with the family’s retriever, their laughter echoing through the chilly afternoon air. Lily looked so happy, so innocent, finally feeling what it was like to have a family after years of living in quiet solitude with an aging grandmother.
"They took twelve years of her life from me," Matthew said quietly, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying resolve. "They broke my wife’s heart and made my daughter live like an orphan. If they think they can touch her again, they're going to learn what happens when a father has nothing left to lose."

"What's the play, Matt?" Jack asked.
"Call my head of security, Marcus," Matthew ordered. "I want the estate on lockdown. Double the perimeter guards. Nobody enters or leaves these grounds without my personal authorization. And Jack... tell your team to stop playing defense. I want an international arrest warrant issued for Dr. Arthur Vance by sunrise tomorrow."
