Chapter 3 - The Guardian's Vow

The heavy oak doors clicked shut as Arthur and his lawyer were roughly escorted off the estate grounds.
The library fell into a deep, peaceful quiet, save for the crackle of the wood fire and the faint sound of rain against the tall glass panes.
I buried my face in Lucy’s soft hair, my shoulders shaking as silent, heavy sobs escaped my chest. Six years of hiding, running, working double shifts, and living in constant fear of Arthur Sterling finding us had finally broken my spirit.
"Clara," Gabriel’s gentle voice sounded right beside me.
He didn't stand over me like a mob boss or an employer. He knelt on one knee beside my chair, his large hand gently resting on the wooden armrest.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Caruso," I sobbed, wiping my eyes with the back of my sleeve. "I brought my messy past into your home. I'll pack our things and leave tonight—"
"Stop talking nonsense," Gabriel interrupted firmly, but with an incredible underlying warmth. "You aren't going anywhere. Look at your daughter."
I looked down at Lucy. She was sleeping soundly, one small hand clutching the silver medal against her chest, completely unaware of the storm that had raged around her.
"She danced like an angel tonight, Clara," Gabriel said softly, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. "When I made that promise on the ballroom floor—about adopting her—it was meant to shock those arrogant fools who were looking down on her plain dress. But seeing her stand her ground... seeing her dance with your medal... I meant every word."
I stared at him in disbelief. "Mr. Caruso... you're a powerful man. Arthur Sterling is dangerous. He controls judges, news outlets, and corporate boards."
"And I control the foundations those men walk on," Gabriel replied calmly. He stood up and walked over to his safe, pulling out a thick, black leather folder. "Six months ago, I noticed discrepancies in Sterling Global’s freight manifests moving through my river ports. I started my own private investigation into Arthur Sterling."
He set the folder on the small table beside my chair.
"Arthur didn't just steal your proxy, Clara," Gabriel revealed, his eyes burning with intense determination. "He embezzled over forty million dollars from your late husband’s trust fund—the fund that was legally set aside for Julian's child. He used your alleged 'abandonment' to seize sole control of the accounts."
My breath hitched in my throat. "Forty million... for Lucy?"
"Yes," Gabriel said. "Arthur knew that if Lucy ever surfaced with proof of her parentage, his entire financial empire would crumble. That's why he terrorized you. That's why he kept you in the dark."

Gabriel reached down and gently touched Lucy’s small, soft hand.
"Tomorrow morning, my legal team files a formal paternity suit and asset-freeze petition in Federal District Court," Gabriel announced. "You and Lucy are moving out of the staff quarters tonight into the main guest wing. Nobody touches my people, Clara. Nobody."
