Chapter 2

Claire’s mother came up the stairs like she owned my house.

Evelyn Whitmore had always moved that way.

Slow.

Elegant.

Certain the world would step aside because it always had.

Her pearls clicked softly against her throat as she reached the nursery door.

Then she saw my face.

She stopped.

Her eyes moved to Lily in my arms.

To Maria on the floor.

To Claire standing pale beside the crib.

Then to my phone.

“What happened?” she asked.

I took one step toward her.

“That is what I was about to ask you.”

Claire whispered, “Mom, don’t.”

Evelyn’s expression tightened.

Only for a second.

Then she smiled.

“Daniel, you’re upset. Hand me the baby.”

Lily whimpered and clung harder to my shirt.

I felt her fear like a knife.

“No.”

Evelyn’s smile faded.

“She’s my granddaughter.”

“She is my daughter.”

“Exactly. And she needs calm, not a room full of servants and accusations.”

Maria flinched at the word servant.

I saw it.

So did Claire.

So did Evelyn.

That word had been used before.

I could feel it.

I turned to Maria.

“Did she know?”

Maria wiped her face.

“Yes.”

Claire snapped, “Be careful.”

Maria looked at her.

For the first time since I had hired her, Maria did not lower her eyes.

“I have been careful for four months.”

Four months.

The words punched the air from my lungs.

I looked at Claire.

“You told me this started recently.”

Claire folded her arms.

“She’s exaggerating.”

Maria rose slowly.

“She told Lily I would be sent away if she cried. She told me nobody would believe a housekeeper over a Bennett. She hid jewelry in my room twice. She made me sign false notes about Lily falling.”

Evelyn sighed.

“How dramatic.”

Maria turned to her.

“You wrote the notes.”

Evelyn’s eyes went sharp.

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel, you cannot let her speak to my mother like that.”

I almost laughed.

My daughter was trembling in my arms, and Claire was worried about tone.

I opened the camera app again.

“Then let’s watch more.”

Claire moved fast.

She lunged for my phone.

I turned my shoulder and blocked her with my arm, keeping Lily away.

Maria stepped between us.

“Don’t touch him.”

Claire slapped Maria across the face.

The sound cracked through the nursery.

Maria stumbled but did not fall.

I handed Lily to her before my anger could make me stupid.

“Take her downstairs.”

Claire screamed, “Do not take my child.”

Lily began crying again.

Maria held her close and backed toward the door.

Evelyn moved to block them.

I stepped in front of her.

“Move.”

Evelyn stared at me.

“I am your mother-in-law.”

“And you are standing between my abused daughter and safety.”

She moved.

Not because she wanted to.

Because I had never spoken to her that way before.

Maria carried Lily downstairs.

Claire tried to follow.

I caught her wrist.

She twisted.

“Let go of me.”

“You are staying right here.”

Evelyn’s voice became cold.

“Careful, Daniel. A man in your position should not be seen restraining his wife.”

There it was.

The real Evelyn.

The one I had caught in flashes for years.

Behind polite smiles.

Behind expensive charity lunches.

Behind every time she told me Claire needed “firmer support” from me.

I looked at her.

“Is that the plan?”

She blinked.

“What plan?”

“Make Maria look like a thief. Make me look violent. Make Lily look unstable.”

Claire’s face twitched.

Evelyn said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Downstairs, Maria’s voice called out.

“Mr. Bennett!”

Panic.

I released Claire and ran.

Maria stood in the living room with Lily behind her.

The front door was open.

A man in a gray suit stood in the foyer holding a leather folder.

Behind him were two uniformed officers.

My stomach dropped.

“Mr. Bennett?” the man asked.

“Yes.”

“My name is Thomas Reed. I’m with Whitmore Family Services. We received an emergency report that your daughter was injured by a household employee and that your wife is being threatened.”

Claire appeared behind me on the stairs.

She began sobbing instantly.

“Thank God you’re here.”

Lily hid behind Maria.

The officers looked at me.

Then at Maria.

Then at Lily.

Evelyn came down slowly, already wearing her wounded grandmother face.

“She’s terrified,” Evelyn said. “That woman hurt her.”

Maria whispered, “No.”

I lifted my phone.

“I have video.”

Thomas Reed hesitated.

Claire cried harder.

“He’s protecting her because she has manipulated him.”

One officer stepped forward.

“Sir, we need everyone to remain calm.”

I looked at him.

“My daughter was hurt by her mother. I have the footage.”

The officer nodded.

“Show me.”

Claire screamed, “No!”

Everyone turned.

Her panic broke the performance.

I played the video.

No one spoke while it ran.

When it ended, Thomas Reed’s face had gone stiff.

The officers looked at Claire.

Evelyn’s mouth had tightened into a thin line.

Claire whispered, “It was edited.”

I scrolled back.

“Here is the live feed.”

Then I opened the older clips.

The first one showed Claire shoving a broken glass under Maria’s bed.

The second showed Evelyn standing in the nursery, telling Lily, “If you tell Daddy, he will think you are bad like your mother.”

My heart stopped.

Like your mother.

Lily’s birth mother, Anna, had died when Lily was eighteen months old.

Claire was my second wife.

And suddenly every strange nightmare Lily had suffered began to make terrible sense.

I looked at Evelyn.

“What did you tell my child about Anna?”

Evelyn’s eyes flicked toward Thomas Reed.

“Nothing harmful.”

Maria suddenly stepped forward.

“She told Lily her real mother died because bad little girls make mommies disappear.”

The room went silent.

Lily made a small broken sound.

I turned and saw my daughter staring at the floor.

“Lily,” I whispered.

She looked up at me with wet eyes.

“Did I make Mommy Anna go away?”

I dropped to my knees.

“No. No, baby. Never.”

Claire wiped her tears and said the cruelest sentence I had ever heard.

“She needed to learn consequences.”

The officer reached for his cuffs.

But Thomas Reed opened his folder.

His face had changed completely.

“Mr. Bennett,” he said quietly, “there is something else you need to see.”

He pulled out a document with my signature at the bottom.

Except I had never signed it.

It was an emergency custody transfer request.

May you like

Giving temporary decision-making power over Lily to Claire and Evelyn.

Dated tomorrow.
