Chapter 5 - The Siege on the Harbor

The threat from the Valenti family wasn't an empty one.
Two weeks after Dominic’s visit, a coordinated effort began to target James’s legitimate business operations across the harbor. Warehouse fires, union disputes, and hijacked supply trucks began causing chaos across the city.
James worked tirelessly around the clock, locking down his territory and shielding his allies. Yet despite the escalating war, he ensured that four of his most trusted men were stationed outside my apartment twenty-four hours a day.
On a rainy Thursday evening, the storm struck home.
I was closing the restaurant late with Frank after the last guests had departed. Chloe was sleeping peacefully in my small private office in the back.
Suddenly, the power to the entire building was cut.
The sparkling chandeliers went black, plunging the vast dining room into deep, terrifying darkness. Emergency backup lights flickered on, casting long, eerie red shadows across the walls.
GLASS SHATTERING.
The heavy floor-to-ceiling windows along the harbor side smashed inward as four masked men armed with crowbars and silenced sidearms burst into the restaurant.
“Grace, stay back!” Frank yelled, pulling his gun and firing two quick shots that drove the intruders behind the bar counters.
I rushed toward the back office, my heart in my throat, praying only for Chloe’s safety. I slammed and locked the heavy oak door, pulling Chloe from her sleep and wrapping her in my arms as she began to cry.
“Mommy? What’s happening?” Chloe sobbed, burying her face in my chest.
“Shh, baby, stay quiet. Mommy’s here. We’re safe,” I whispered frantically, pushing a heavy desk against the door.
Outside the office, the sound of splintering wood and shouted orders echoed through the hallway.
“Find the girl!” a harsh voice shouted—it was Dominic Valenti. “Moretti’s entire empire collapses if we take his precious manager!”
The office door handle rattled violently.
BANG! BANG!
Someone slammed their shoulder against the heavy wood. The frame began to splinter.
“Open the door, Bennett!” Dominic taunted from the hallway. “Your mob boss isn't here to save you tonight!”
I looked around the room frantically, grabbing a heavy brass candleholder from the desk, standing in front of my daughter, ready to fight for her life with my last breath.
The door burst open, wood splinters flying through the air.
Dominic stepped into the doorway, a gun in his hand, a twisted smile on his pale face. “End of the line, sweetheart—”
CRASH!
Before Dominic could raise his weapon, the side window of the office shattered into a million pieces.
A silhouette dropped through the glass like a dark thunderbolt.
It was James.
He moved with unreal, terrifying speed. Before Dominic could pull the trigger, James grabbed Dominic’s wrist, twisting it back until the gun fell to the floor. With a brutal, fluid blow, James struck Dominic across the face, driving him back into the corridor and slamming him against the wall with enough force to crack the plaster.
Moretti’s enforcers swarmed through the shattered windows and back entrances, completely overpowering the remaining Valenti men within seconds.
The corridor went silent, save for Dominic’s agonizing groans as he slumped against the floor, completely defeated.
James didn't even look down at his fallen rival.
He turned into the office, his suit torn, his breathing heavy, his face covered in rain and cuts from the shattered glass.
He looked at me. He looked at Chloe cowering behind the desk.
“Grace...” James rasped, his voice trembling with a terrifying vulnerability I had never seen in him. “Are you hurt? Is she hurt?”
I dropped the candleholder. My legs gave out, and I stumbled forward.
James caught me instantly, pulling me against his broad chest, holding me so tightly I could feel the thundering rhythm of his heart against my cheek.
“I’m fine... we’re fine,” I sobbed, wrapping my arms around his neck, burying my face into his shoulder. “You came... you actually came.”
May you like
“I will always come for you,” James whispered into my hair, his hands trembling as he cradled the back of my head. “Always.”
Chloe ran over, wrapping her small arms around both of our legs. James reached down, picking her up with one arm, holding us both against him in the dark, ruined office, shielding us from the cold world outside.
