Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM SHADOWS

The emergency board meeting at Vance Enterprises was scheduled for 9:00 AM on Tuesday.
Arthur Pendelton sat at the head of the long glass table, surrounded by twelve board members. He wore a smug smile, adjusting his silk tie as he looked around the room.
"Gentlemen," Pendelton announced, tapping his pen against a glass. "In light of the recent tragic personal scandals surrounding Thomas Vance, his ability to lead this corporation has been severely compromised. We must vote today to appoint an interim chairman."
"Aren't you rushing this, Arthur?" one elderly board member asked. "Thomas built this firm."
"Thomas is fifty-nine and clearly failing in his judgment," Pendelton retorted coldly. "He let an international fraudster into our financial systems. We cannot afford his sentimentality."
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
I walked into the room, flanked by Genevieve, Julian, and two federal marshals.
Pendelton’s smile instantly evaporated. "Thomas... this is a closed executive session. You have no standing here until the internal review is complete."
"This company bears my name, Arthur," I said, walking down the length of the table and standing directly opposite him. "And you are sitting in my chair."
"The board has called a vote!" Pendelton snapped, standing up. "You don't have the majority voting shares anymore!"
"Actually, he does," Genevieve interrupted, stepping forward and opening a blue legal binder. "At 8:00 AM this morning, the United States District Court issued an emergency freeze on all shares held by Kensington Holdings and its affiliated partners—including your twelve percent stake, Mr. Pendelton."
Pendelton turned pale. "What?"
"Furthermore," Julian added, pulling a set of federal arrest warrants from his coat, "the FBI has just indicted you for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate sabotage, and illegal toxic substance distribution."
The two federal marshals stepped forward, walking around the table.
"You can't do this!" Pendelton screamed, struggling as the marshals grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. "Thomas! We built this together! You can't ruin me for a woman!"
"You didn't just target me, Arthur," I said, looking him dead in the eye as he was forced toward the exit. "You targeted my daughter and my grandson. You're done."
The board members sat in stunned silence as Pendelton was dragged out of the skyscraper, screaming threats that echoed uselessly down the hallway.

I turned to the remaining board members, resting my hands on the mahogany table.
"Now, gentlemen," I announced calmly. "Let's get back to work."
