Chapter 5 - The Master Plan

Three months later.
Spring had arrived in Detroit. The thick winter ice on the Detroit River had melted, replaced by blue waters glistening under a brilliant April sun.
The scandal surrounding Victoria Sterling and the Syndicate had rocked the city, but Harlan Voss had emerged stronger than ever. With Victoria permanently behind bars and the corrupt board members purged, Voss Logistics was restructured into an ethical, community-focused empire.
On a warm Saturday morning, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up to a renovated brick building on 4th Street—just three blocks away from the diner where I used to work double shifts.
Harlan stepped out of the car, wearing a tailored gray suit without a tie, looking relaxed and strikingly handsome. He walked around to open my door.
I stepped out onto the sidewalk, wearing a simple floral dress. Belle hopped out behind me, wearing a yellow cardigan and carrying a small sketchbook.
"Where are we?" I asked, looking up at the freshly painted facade of the building. The sign above the wide glass windows was still covered by a navy tarp.
"Your appointment," Harlan smiled softly.
"My appointment?" I repeated, bewildered.
Belle giggled, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward the front door. "Open it, Rue! Open it!"
Harlan pulled a small gold key from his pocket and pressed it into my hand.
I stepped up to the door, unlocked it, and pushed it open.
Inside was a magnificent, sun-drenched space. High ceilings with exposed wooden beams, polished concrete floors, custom iron shelving, and a massive glass greenhouse atrium extending out into a private rear courtyard filled with blooming hydrangeas, roses, and rare orchids.
Sitting on a marble counter near the entrance was a small brass plaque engraved with gold letters:
RUE’S BOTANICAL GARDENS & NURSERY Designed by Rue Callaway
I froze in the middle of the showroom, my hands flying over my mouth, tears instantly spilling over my eyelashes.
"Harlan..." I whispered, turning around slowly. "What... what is this?"
Harlan stepped inside, closing the door behind him, locking out the noise of the city. He walked over to me, pulling a thick leather binder from his coat pocket and placing it on the counter.
"The deed to the property," Harlan explained softly. "Fully paid. The greenhouse construction was completed last week. The inventory is arriving on Monday. And your grand opening is scheduled for May first."
"I... I can't accept this," I stammered, shaking my head, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the gift. "Harlan, this costs hundreds of thousands of dollars—"
"It doesn't cost anything compared to what you gave me, Rue," Harlan interrupted gently. He stepped closer, taking both of my trembling hands into his.
"You gave my daughter her life back," Harlan said, his gray eyes shining with endless warmth and devotion. "You gave this fortress of a house a home. And you gave me a reason to love again."
Belle ran over, wrapping her small arms around both of our legs. "Do you like it, Rue?! Daddy and I helped pick the roses!"
"I love it," I cried, dropping to my knees and pulling Belle into a tight embrace. "I love it so much."
Harlan knelt down beside us, his large hand resting on my waist, pulling me close to his side.
"There's one more thing," Harlan said softly.
He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box. He clicked it open.
Inside rested a flawless, radiant-cut emerald ring surrounded by delicate diamond leaves—a ring that looked like a blooming flower caught in timeless light.
"Rue Callaway," Harlan said, his voice dropping into that deep, velvety register that had captivated me from the very first night in that frozen garage. "You walked into my dark, violent world on a freezing Tuesday night with fifteen dollars in your purse, and you transformed everything. I don't ever want to face this city without you by my side."
He looked into my eyes, his soul completely bare before me.
"Will you marry me, Rue? Will you make Belle and me the luckiest men and women in the world?"
"YES!" Belle shrieked before I could even answer, jumping up and down on the polished floor. "Say yes, Rue! Say yes!"
I let out a wet, breathless laugh, tears streaming happily down my cheeks. I reached out and framed Harlan’s handsome jaw with both of my hands.
May you like
"Yes, Harlan," I whispered fiercely. "A thousand times, yes."
Harlan smiled—a brilliant, breathtaking smile that lit up his entire face. He slipped the emerald ring onto my finger, pulled me into his arms, and kissed me with a passion that made the whole world fade away into warm, golden light.
