Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage and the Iron Door

Alina felt the air leave her lungs as if she had been struck in the solar plexus.

"What did you just say?" she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock and white-hot fury.

Dorian didn't answer immediately. He turned on his heel, his long wool coat swirling around his legs as he walked briskly toward the window, putting physical distance between them. His broad back was turned to her, his fists balled inside his pockets.

"Dorian Cross, look at me!" Alina cried out, sliding off the examination table despite Dr. Mercer’s cautionary protest. Her bare feet hit the cold linoleum floor. "What do you mean, you filed just in time?!"

Dr. Mercer slowly stepped toward the door, quietly gathering her charts. "I’ll... I’ll give you two a moment. Ring the call button if you need anything, Alina."

The door clicked shut, sealing them inside the sterile, humming silence of the room.

Alina marched across the floor, stopping two feet behind him. She reached out and grabbed his arm, spinning him around with a strength born purely of adrenaline.

"Explain that," she demanded, her green eyes blazing into his dark ones. "You file for divorce six months after ignoring me, locking yourself in your office, treating me like a ghost in my own home—and now, the moment you find out I’m carrying your children, your first thought is that your paperwork was timed right?! Are you trying to get rid of us?!"

Dorian looked down at her. His face was a mask of rigid, impenetrable control, but his chest heaved beneath his shirt, betraying the hurricane raging underneath.

"You don't understand," he said, his voice dangerously low.

"Then make me understand!" she shouted, her voice cracking. "Is there another woman? Is your business collapsing? Are you trying to protect your empire from a messy custody battle? Because if you think I’m going to let you walk away and treat my children like collateral damage in a corporate settlement, you don't know me at all!"

"Your children?" Dorian repeated, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping his throat. He caught her shoulders in his large hands, his grip firm but not painful, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. "They aren't just your children, Alina. They are my blood. My heirs. My entire world."

"Then why are you talking about timing the divorce?!" she sobbed, a single tear breaking free and tracking down her pale cheek. "If you want them, why did you want me gone?"

Dorian’s hands slid down to grip her wrists, his thumb gently brushing over her pulse point, feeling how fast it was racing.

"Because six months ago, I found out who put a bounty on my head," Dorian said, the words dropping into the space between them like lead weights.

Alina stopped breathing. The anger evaporated, replaced by a sudden, freezing wave of horror. "What?"

"A contract," Dorian continued, his voice dropping into a harsh, gravelly whisper. "Not from the rival syndicates in Cicero or the Outfit on the South Side. From inside my own perimeter. Someone close to my operations was leaking security schedules, logistics manifests, and warehouse locations. For eighteen months, I’ve been hunting a ghost."

He reached up, his knuckles gently brushing against her cheek, wiping away the tear with a tenderness that completely wrecked her composure.

"Two weeks before I filed for divorce," Dorian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity, "the intelligence reports came back. The leak wasn't an employee. It wasn't a capo. It was tied to a shell company registered under a trust managed by your uncle's law firm."

Alina staggered backward as if she had been physically shoved. Her hands flew to her mouth. "My uncle... Arthur? That's... that's impossible. Uncle Arthur is retired! He lives in Florida! He hasn't practiced criminal law in twenty years!"

"Arthur Vane is a quiet financier for the North Side syndicate," Dorian said flatly. "And three weeks ago, my men intercepted a communication from his offshore accounts. The target wasn't just my shipping lanes, Alina. The target was you."

The room seemed to spin on its axis.

"Me?" Alina whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the machine.

"They couldn't get to me directly. My security is too tight, my inner circle is too locked down," Dorian said, his voice cracking with a raw, buried agony she had never heard from him before. "So they planned to use you. A staged accident. A kidnapping. Leverage to force me to hand over the port authorities and my entire estate on a silver platter."

He stepped closer, caging her between his body and the edge of the examination table, his hands resting on the counter on either side of her hips.

"When I found out, my blood ran cold," Dorian whispered fiercely. "I realized that as long as you were legally, publicly tied to Dorian Cross—the kingpin, the target, the man at the center of a hundred gangland wars—you had a massive target painted on your back."

Alina stared at him, the massive, agonizing puzzle finally snapping together in her mind.

"That's why you pulled away," she breathed, the realization dawning like a cold sunrise. "That's why you stopped sleeping in our bed. Why you acted like a stranger. You were trying to push me away so that when your enemies came looking for a weakness, they’d see a failing marriage, an estranged wife, a woman who meant nothing to Dorian Cross."

"I filed for divorce to sever the legal tie," Dorian confirmed, his voice breaking slightly. "I was going to ship you off to Zurich under a new identity with a billion-dollar trust fund where no one could ever touch you, once I had systematically hunted down and executed every last rat involved in the conspiracy."

May you like

He looked down at her flat stomach, his expression twisting with a mixture of profound awe and cold terror.

"I wanted to keep you safe," Dorian whispered. "I filed for divorce so you and my future could survive... and instead, you walked into my office today carrying my children, right into the middle of a war zone that’s about to explode."
